Highways or Routes?

Question for the masses. Not sure if the question needs to be asked in a higher forum than this (i.e. the editor forum).

What should highways in Newfoundland be known as? Highways or Routes?

We’ve got routes:

Highways (and thanks Google for blurring out the TCH logo, good privacy concern there):

Or is it as simple as “Highway 1” for the TCH, and “Route xxx” for everything else?

It depends. :slight_smile:

If the sign is “Route XX”, then it should be “Rte XX”. If the sign is “Highway XX” (e.g. TCH), then it should be “Hwy XX”.

If some areas call them Routes and others Highways, then stick with the local signage. Note that “Rte 2” might be different from “Hwy 2”…
