Now, the guy who set that up obviously took a lot of time but I would imagine it’s a total nightmare for navigation and god only knows what it looks like on the client.
Is there any way to send a message to the guy who did it before I set it up a bit more sensibly, I don’t want to go upsetting anyone!
(P.S. Perhaps I’m being harsh and it should stay…)
If they are registered on the forum then you can contact them via PM from here.
I guess you are referring to pticawr? If so click the link and send a PM.
I’m sure you can have a chat and work something out. But I would check connectivity on the map first to make sure it is Ok or otherwise for routing.
Yeah it’s overly complex but if it actually routes ok I wouldn’t bother “fixing” it. I doubt you’ll be able to see most of the separate roads on the client even at maximum zoom.
The main issue it might have is that it gives “keep right/left” rather than “turn right/left”
I’ll go for a tad of one-upmanship with the glory of Six Dials in Southampton. I’m not responsible for its spagetti, and its pre-basemap import form was only slightly less complex. I can only admit to having cleaned up dubious two-ways, no entrance sections and merged a bunch of junction points into one.
That is one of the problems. The second one is that you need to keep a very close eye on naming the ramps. They should be named like the road they are going to, not like the where they are.
I’ve seen some of these in the Dutch basemap. I always convert them to a simple # or even + shape after trying to get them right a few times.
I think the way it’s currently done works well, since it’s such a complex crossing. With junctions like that, it’s simply a matter of lots of 1-way routes crossing each other, and I feel the “keep left/right” instructions probably even work better on that one.
This still needs attention on the second permalink. Otherwise, this one should work well indeed with keep r/l in stead of turn r/l.
Edit: the LHD is a bit confusing for me, being used to RHD, but I guess there should be a way to turn from NW to SW. I think these two segments need to be connected for that.
I don’t think those are legal turns on that junction. The island in the centre does not serve as a “roundabout”, but simply a divider for all the carriageways. Ideally someone with local knowledge of the junction would need to confirm/deny if those turns exist, but I am tempted to think they do not.
I suspect the comments are probably correct regarding navigation with the cambridge junction and perhaps it is excessively complicated - although all the connections are correct.
It does suffer from missing the turn instructions, though presumably what it ought to say (for example heading northbound and turning onto cowley park) is “keep right and then turn right” and not just “turn right”?
I think by tracing the lanes on the map you are never likely to get satisfactory navigation instructions. One way to do it might have been to add the lanes as you did, but then make the turns at the end much more abrupt, maybe by making all the “ramps” meet at 1 or 2 nodes in the centre of the junction before turning off (for example, the northbound Milton Rd into Cowley Park slip could join up with the Science Park to Cowley Park slip), and just making sure that only the correct routes were allowed through the node. It wouldn’t be entirely correct geographically, but it would certainly be the best in terms of navigation.
How important is (slip) road naming for navigation? Is this only used for display purposes or does it affect the navigation instructions?
If a road splits in one direction and has the same road name how does it know which is the main one so not to say keep left/right. If a road name changes at a corner (or even if the road name does not change but there is a junction), will it say turn left/right if there is otherwise nowhere else to go?
Slip road names won’t appear on the map, but will appear in navigation. There is a section on slip road naming in the wiki, and also a thread about it in this forum. Although the thread is aimed at motorway/dual carriageway slips, the convention can apply to all slips. The slip I talked about before could be named “Milton Rd Exit to Cowley Park”.
The alternative would be to ditch the slips entirely and put just basic junctions in of course. I think that if slips are there, they should be named properly though.
Designating a road as a “ramp” should always result in an instruction of some sort, even when the turn is physically tiny.
hi,just thought I would say hello, I’m relatively new to Waze, but would like to be involved in making a local contribution, getting the maps and driving instructions, in and around Cambridge correct.
There are a few people that seem to be fairly active editing around the Cambridge area including myself. There is still quite a bit of work to do in Cambridge itself.
