L4 - L3 Downlock - A6027 - De Havilland Way

Can the A6027 - De Havilland Way at the crossing of Mansell Way and Lostock Ln be downlocked to L3 please?

Although the right-turn filters look more dramatic, there are also dedicated lanes for turning left, which need to be added. Without them, drivers are getting a “Keep left” voice command even if they are going straight on, which could be interpreted as an instruction to take the left-hand lanes, which become turning lanes. With the dedicated lanes the voice instructions will be an unequivocal “Turn left” or “Turn right”, depending on the route set.

I intend to use the same nodes as the existing right-turning lanes, but pull the nodes back a little to more closely follow the overheads.

Thanks!

Mike

A better solution would be to remove the name from the right-turn lanes. This would then cause Waze to think that the straight-ahead route was the “natural continuation”, with the same road name.

There would then be no verbal prompt for going straight on, and the right turn instruction would change to something like “keep right onto Mansell Way”, which would again be an improvement on “keep right onto the road you are already on”.

You could then flatten out the start of the right-turn lane heading east, which has been made a “turn” angle rather than a “keep/exit” angle, presumably to avoid an instruction when going straight.

The Junction Angle Info script enables you to test this sort of thing without waiting for a tile update (or even saving), just look at the colours of the angles. Or you can play with this Wiki page.

Area downlocked.

Brilliant idea! I wasn’t much looking forward to cluttering up the mapping with dedicated left-turning lanes, when the problem was the existing right-turning lanes. So, I removed the road names.

Thinking about it a bit more, those right-turning lanes are dedicated to Mansell Way (from the north-east) and Lostock Ln (from the south-west), so I have named them as such (counter-factually, it has to be said).

Yes, I’d noticed this and was going to smooth it out because, before I got going on this, drivers approaching from the south-west on the A6027 - De Havilland Way intending to turn onto Lostock Ln, would receive the confusing voice command “Turn right onto A6027 - De Havilland Way”. Huh?

However, after renaming the right filters, I actually steepened the angle of the Mansell Rd one and fettled the Lostock Ln filter, so that the voice command should now be “Turn right onto Mansell Way (Lostock Ln)” the fact that drivers will get an additional “Turn right onto Mansell Way (Lostock Ln)” at the traffic lights I would argue only serves as confirmation.

So, as you say

Thanks for your help on this. If you feel that the slips would be better without names, then feel free to change them, otherwise, this area can be re-locked to 4.

Road names on Waze serve three functions, and sometimes they conflict. :frowning:

Function one is to enable people to navigate to addresses in the roads. Not relevant for these turn lanes as they have no buildings along them.

Function two is to display the road name on the app map. I think these turn lanes are more De Havilland Way than Mansell Way/Lostock Ln, although it’s a moot point. No name is probably best for the app map.

Function three is to help with the app instructions, both written (at the top of the screen) and spoken. Here we clearly want the destination road name. But, if turning onto a blank road name, the app will look ahead (for up to 1km?) along the route for a named road. Sometimes this goes badly wrong, as when you get to a junction between two innominate single track country lanes in Devon, and get told to “turn left onto the A30”, which is still a couple of junctions away. But here it means that we can leave the turn lane names blank and still get Mansell Way/Lostock Ln mentioned in the instructions.

So all things considered, on the basis that I don’t think we want the turn lane names displayed on the map, I’ve blanked them out. And I’ve changed them to “primary street” too, since they’re not part of a through Major Highway route.

PS just to complete the story, had they been "ramp"s, point two above wouldn’t apply, as ramp names never appear on the app map (just in the instructions). But we’re specifically told only to use ramps for split level junctions, although I’ve never understood why.

Yes, yes, yes and yes - agreed on all counts.

There is, however, one teensy thing with which I do not agree: downgrading the filters to ‘Primary Streets’ is one thing (although I preferred them in that nice shade of blue), but they’re also only locked to L3.

The danger is that some wandering Editor, like me, might happen across this junction and ‘helpfully’ rename the right filters as A6027 De Havilland Way, because that’s what they ‘obviously’ are and Bingo! off we go again with potential URs.

So, to obviate this, could I suggest either colouring the filters blue or uplocking the ‘Primary Streets’ to L4?

Thanks again for your help.

Mike

OK, back to L4.
