Well done. Is that from driving it or just mapping it out from the satellite and maps.

Looks like the next bit to tackle is the city names, otherwise you just know someone will try and take a trip to that New Zealand place (I hear its really green there).

satellite and maps

to be fair 50 -70 had been driven but all the dots needed to be joined together

still lots of work to do

I hoping that some south Islanders start taking up the cause?

Hmmmm hope the quality of the work you’ve done in the South Island is better than the North, I’ve been for a visit to your end of New Zealand. I was heading to Repia on the Pouto Peninsula. The roads are all there so why couldn’t waze route me there?? Just had a glance at the map and that would be because you have left turn restrictions on a number of intersections through Te Kopuru, thats only a glance mind, God knows what I’ll find when I fix your crap editing tomorrow. I also was unaware that most of the Pouto Peninsula roads are all one way. I for one am rather over people who think points are more important than a quality map.

Welcome to the New Zealand Waze forum

For a first post you have gone hard out

can you post a permalink of the problem area.

I had a quick look at the area and it did indeed have soft turns in red.

Do you understand about “soft” and “hard” turns?

My understanding is soft turns will change automatically when enough people dive then.

You can only tell the difference if you install the highlight mod.

Yeah you’re right, it was a long day.

I changed the worst of the intersections last night those were the ones with not a single road being able to be turned into, and yes I know the difference between hard and soft turns and those ones weren’t soft. Why leave soft turns at all, click on the intersection node then press the q key then the w key and you have no turn restrictions at all, having said that don’t forget to go back after and put in the real turn restrictions if any.

Everywhere I have driven in the Nth Island I come across your roads. I hear you say but I’m not the only one and sadly you’re right, you’re just the most prolific. Why no names, why leave turn restrictions? I never understood why waze is useless at routing anywhere outside Auckland until I drove through Taupo recently. How many other towns have been left crippled like that.

Forget “points”, the point you have missed is the roads didnt exist 6 months ago so we are no worse off

If I was breaking road that would be a different matter.

Isn’t the point in editing the map to make improvements, rather than leaving it ‘no worse off’'?
If that’s all you aim to do on the map then the only benefit gained is the points you get from mapping large numbers of new roads.

Thanks pcp192 my thoughts exactly.

A half finished job is just that, unfinished.

I think its probably better that the roads exist over having names, cities… the roads may not navigate correctly if you search for them, but if they dont exist Waze cant learn about then and wont find the other possibly faster route to where your going.

Personally I would prefer that someone with local knowledge makes the detail (city/street/direction) changes than someone who is taking a guess by qw’ing the intersection based on an image that was taken 3-7 years ago.
I would like to suggest tho, if you do create a road that you dont know then mark it as unknown rather than one-way or two-way. Waze treats these the same as soft turns and it will send people down them so it can learn it.

Until very recently (<6 months) Waze was crap at routing because the roads didnt exist outside of Auckland, its mainly thanks to those editors such as ispy who have spent the time adding the town roads that you can get around at all. It maybe nowhere close to being able to navigate to streets in other cities but that will come if everyone chips in and puts their knowledge in. Just dont scare off the editors who have the time to get it done.

I think theres really two parts to doing the editing:

  • Add the road so that Waze can find, learn and use it
  • THEN add the extra detail

Lastly on points, remember you get 1.5 points per add, edit and delete so to create the road, change its direction, do a ‘q’ and ‘w’ would actually result 6 points rather than 1.5, so I dont think ispy is doing it straight for points, if that was the case why not just sit there and hit q and w on an intersection all day?

Thanks nzhook

you are my soul friend :?

I agree 100% with what you say

6 months ago if you lived in Taupo you might turn on waze as there would be nothing. You would think waze was rubbish and never use it.

My plan was to have some roads so al least it might create some interest. Local users need to maintain local roads.

finished
