Have there been any discussions about the needed changes to road segments when the Mass Turnpike switches to all-electronic tolling next month? (Tentative date Oct 28)

Some segments that are toll-free right now (like driving from Exit 16 to Exit 17) will have to pay a toll. The harbor tunnels and the Tobin Bridge go to tolls in each direction.

And there are sections of the Turnpike around Worcester and Springfield that will be toll-free. (Travel solely within Exits 10-10A-11 as well as Exits 4-5-6 will result in no toll)

Hey rob. Great topic and one that we have discussed in the MA google hangout a couple of times. Two things we need to do with this project one is to update how the toll markings on the roads are to reflect the new tolling style. Waze assigns a penalty associated with toll booths that gets factored into routing also since avoid tolls isn’t absolute the way waze routes based off number of tolls and added penalties may need to be evaluated as waze has no way of knowing actual cost of a toll if it is $0.50 or $5.00. So there may be some work to monitor the new implementation

We also want to add onto the maps the electronic gantries so they may show on the map. Just need to finalize locating them all.

The conversion of toll segments will have to be timed closely with the actual conversion as those changes happen with a tile update and can’t really be done too far in advance.

If you know approximate locations of the gantries feel free to share I found a mass dot map that had them in terms of exits but not specific location for the place markers.

Also if you are ever joining some of the conversations via Google hangouts. Let us know. It’s a more immediate way to communicate with the mass group of editors: waze talk and have some fun.
