Since this feature was recently released to production, I am proposing a short wiki on it. It is my understanding that these map comments should be used in place of [NOTE] URs or other ways of making long-term notes on the map. Let me know if you have any corrections or additions.
Update: This is also being discussed in the global wiki forum, but since actions on the global wiki can take a while, I am proposing my draft linked in this thread (slightly different from the draft for global) as the basis for USA guidance.
Since the new WME version I have updated the page to show that locking does not restrict further comments being made by lower editors. They just can’t edit the map comment itself.
I suggest that we align the wiki for MC with best map practice and not encourage users to use it for map update requests.
In my mind a very small suggestion under When to use map comments is required. The changes showing in bold in the text below.
Many, including me, are still using URs to add notes to self from the client, while driving, so it’s important to distinguish between URs reported form LiveMap, that should be put now as MC, and URs reported from the client that don’t need to be replaced by MC.
I agree, and Live Map URs were what I had in mind when I originally wrote that sentence. I guess I assumed that URs made from the client by editors are the same as URs made from the client by anyone else, whereas pretty much only editors use the live map to make URs, but that’s not clear in the current version of the page. Thanks for distinguishing!
I don’t tend to use Area Comments since they can’t be seen at Zoom. Point Comments can be seen at all Zooms and don’t clutter the map, so my opinion is not to use Area Comments at all (or rarely)
I believe the area comments I have seen seem appropriate since they are commenting on connected roads, neighborhoods, or other area based information. I would say maybe suggest using point comments when possible for the reasons listed and use area comments when absolutely necessary.
I agree with this, as long as you incorporate hmarian’s suggestion to say “update requests from Live Map” in the first sentence and some note of caution about overuse at the end.
In addition to Kartografer’s comments about adding a caution on overuse, I propose adding a statement to delete the Map Comments dealing with temporary or missing information when those are completed/updated. Reorganizing Nagamasa’s text (I’ve made some wording changes also) and adding in Kartografer’s and hmarian’s comments,
Edited to correct spelling of Kartografer’s handle. My apologies.
One point I didn’t manage to find the right words for:
Is there an example/better wording that we can use that isn’t construction completion? I’m concerned that in many cases where “construction is completed”, but now there is “imagery out of date”.
