[New page] Railroad crossing

Hey all, we’ve been delinquent some time for getting RRC info out there.

I copied and pasted the text from the Draft document into the blank RRC page, and did some quick wordsmithing for the wiki format. I didn’t (yet) copy over all the pictures from the doc.

Additionally, @ojlaw ⑥ LC has a draft wiki in his userspace that we can take from to finalize the RRC page:

thanks nick!
i would suggest adding the mbox at the top for rank 4 editors

there are always questions about exempt crossings. i think it’s worthwhile adding something about them, even if it’s just check with local leadership.

also i would add the lock settings by region and how they behave in the app.

thanks.

oh ya, also add some pictures

Zoom level in OJ’s document needs to be updated to new level (currently shows 8) perhaps 20?.

Lock level looks like it was mentioned but just wanted to comment to make sure it doesn’t get missed in the final edit.

that’s actually in what was published today. my draft has 20

FYI, both the published page and the draft link at the top of this forum thread have 8. Perhaps the link above is just a copy of your draft from earlier.

this is the first draft from champs
in google docs form
this is what was published today
both of those have 8

this is the wiki draft i made months ago but never proceeded for discussion/ approval. it has 20
hope that helps clear it up.

also, something i didn’t know until today only R4 can add RRCs but any rank can edit them if the RRC is locked at their level or less. suggest putting that in the wiki

The wiki should also advise not to use RRC for trains and roads at different elevations.

I forgot to come back to this after the holidays last year. Any objections to me updating this page with the draft I posted. The draft also includes items mentioned in this thread.

None from me.

Looks good to me

Thanks all. Update published.

Would love to finalize the section on Exempt crossings. I’ve had informal discussions as questions have come up relating to URs.

There was an idea upthread about directing questions on Exempt crossings to regional leadership, but we should at least list criteria relating to why the crossing is exempt and how that affects drivers.

Bottom line question: If the railroad tracks are still present is there any reason not to map the crossing alert?

And, perhaps a related bottom line question: if a user reports the railroad is no longer in service, how do we verify that?

I’m not really certain what an exempt crossing would be. My take on it is if there are still tracks, map the RRC.

As far as verifying out-of-service lines, no idea. I’ve been able to verify track removal through news sources at times,

Here is what I found on Exempt

Here is a sample of an exempt railroad crossing, found in Idaho west of Atomic City, just west of the junction of US-20 and US-26:

IDAPA 39.03.41.15 amends 2003 MUTCD regulation on exempt crossings.

I think it’s worth noting that exempt crossings, at least in Idaho, do NOT mean discontinued/retired/out of service tracks. Instead, they are much less used tracks and a crew has to flag the crossing when it is going to be used. Buses, hazmat, etc. are otherwise not required to stop at exempt crossings.

With the transition of RRC to the permanent hazard system last year, almost the entire page has become outdated. I am proposing a complete overhaul of the page with a draft available here (commenting enabled):

Proposed Changes: RRC Overhaul Draft (11/2025) - Google Documenten
Current Wazeo page: Railroad crossing

This is also in tandem with a set of proposed changes to the mapping guidelines railroad road type,
