No City in Road Names

The Australian Road Names wiki says that Freeways, Major Highways and Minor Highways all need to have the “None” box ticked for City. I do not think that this is necessary as it will not have any effect on continuity (as the routing server doesn’t use the city name for Big Detour Prevention). The reason behind ticking None in the City box may have more to do with this issue than anything else.

It might mean that when the road is within the City polygon, then it might be able to have the City name set as part of the primary name. Is this right or would it be more simple to keep things as they are?

What issue are you trying to fix with this?

Having it as “No city” merely means that the City field doesn’t interfere with the current cities bounding boxes. Why would you want to add unnecessary complication? The Alt names are there for local routing, if you need a city name.

The issue is that there area a lot of Minor Highways up that have Cities in the primary names. To meet the criteria from the wiki, they’ll all need to be changed

from experience, having “No city” is way simpler. So yeah if they have cities in the primary name, they’ll need to be changed.

I wish Magic could flag this for us.

Road Selector Highlights working together with Road Selector can do it though. This criteria will highlight any Freeways, Major Highways, Minor Highways or ramps with City set: (Road Type = “Freeway” OR Road Type = “Major Highway” OR Road Type = “Minor Highway” OR Road Type = “Ramp”) AND City != “”

Thanks Funwayz! It’s a little buggy (seems to highlight level 2 railway too?) but it did the job for me.

Would whatever is causing that issue be looking at just primary names or could it be looking at alts as well?

I believe this potential problem is addressed in the alternate naming of the road having the city. For example:

Primary: A1 - Pacific Hwy, no city
Alt: A1, no city
Alt: Pacific Hwy, Coffs Harbour**
Alt: Grafton St, Coffs Harbour

Where the alternate name marked with ** would allow the city to extend out. Would you agree, ituajr?

I think that this section of the US Wiki might be explaining a similar situation
