Project KoiFish Instructions

Hi Editor,

The goal of this map editing guide is to help you use and arbitrate Map Suggestions.

KoiFish was developed to provide editors with superpowers that will help impact the quality and accuracy of the Waze Map even more. In the first stage, these Map Suggestions will surface potentially missing segments in WME sourced from Google Maps.

You will be able to resolve these suggestions by:

  1. Adding new data to the Waze Map
    OR
  2. Sending feedback to Google Maps operators to help them understand where to improve the map. This means your edit helps even more people on the road

Reviewing and Accepting Suggestions
Step 1
1. Enable the Issues layer
2. Enable the Map Suggestions in the Issue Tracker
3. Add desired filtering

Step 2
Click on a suggestion

Step 3
As with any edit, make sure you verify a suggestion.
Please take extra care around street names and verify that the street/city are correct
Verify using:

  • Check GPS tracks
  • Check Street View
  • Check aerial imagery - We are working on getting you the most updated imagery directly in WME.
  • Verify using other local resources available

Step 4
Add and Adjust

Step 5
After adding, you can adjust properties of the segment. Don’t forget to save your edit (:

Always “add & adjust” if Waze is missing the segment
What will Google Maps do if I “add & adjust”? Great question.
Don’t worry, Google Maps will have the information if you changed something.

A quick example:

1. A suggestion surfaced a segment marked as “Street”.
2. Waze doesn’t have the segment yet. After verifying you want to accept it, but you notice it should be marked as a “Parking Lot Road” instead of a “Street”.
3. Go ahead and click “accept & adjust”.
4. Edit the segment as needed and save your change.
5. Even though you accepted the suggestion, you will be able to help Google Maps update their segment to a more appropriate road type.

Rejecting Suggestions
The lifecycle of a rejected suggestion
Rejecting bad suggestions with the right reason is critical. Why?
We surface only drivable segments in Google Maps to you using Suggestions - a street, ramp, or higher level road. This means that Google Maps users could currently get routed through these segments.
When you decide to reject a suggestion, Google Maps will be removing the road from their map, moving it, or changing its road type (with a few exceptions, we’ll get to those). Therefore, choosing the right suggestion reason is critical. The more accurate your rejection reason is you chose, the higher the chances that in the future your edits will be accepted automatically by Google Maps.

By rejecting suggestions, we can help billions of drivers drive smarter and safer!

Rejection reasons overview (cont.)

Waze Doesn’t map such roads (Incorrect road type)
Non-drivable road (pedestrian, bike lane, etc)

How is this different from “Permanently closed”?
Permanently closed means the road was once drivable and now isn’t. Choosing “non-drivable road” means that this has always been a bike/pedestrian path.

Private road or Military

When should I use this?
Use for Factories, Military bases, etc

Basically any area that has roads that are behind a gate/not accessible to the public

Offroad/Unmantained

When should I use this?

  • Use for rough 4x4, farmland, etc
*
  • Basically everything that requires a jeep/tractor to drive in and we don’t want to add.*
  • Do not use for gravel/good unpaved roads*
  • We should probably add them and mark as “unpaved”!*

Back Alley / Parking Lot roads

When should I use this?
Use for PLRs that we don’t want to add, small service roads, Back alleys/etc

If you wish to add them - please do but please remember to change their road type!

Other (Ferry, runway, etc)

Google Maps action:
To be investigated by a Geo operator

Rejection reasons overview

Road already exists

Google Maps action:
- Sent to devs to investigate*
- (Maybe) change geometry to match Waze

Google Maps action:
- Delete the road if missing from current imagery
- If visible in current imagery, disallow navigation

RKoi Tips & Tricks
Process suggestions by importance using the amazing Issue Tracker

  • If in your country are less relevant, you can filter out unpaved suggestions, it will declutter the map and make your life easier to process them.

  • Proccess suggestion from the most of the least impactful, filter suggestion by road type

Mass Accept/Reject suggestions
You can easily mass select segment suggestions and Accept/Reject them.
Use Cmd/Ctrl + Shift and the mouse cursor to multi select all suggestions in one area and the Accept/Reject.

Known Issues
We see quite a lot of farm roads suggested as “streets” in some countries. Please use the mass selection tool here and reject with the proper rejection!
