Recommendations/Advice on complex junction (Northampton)

Hi all

Responded to a UR about this junction (Permalink), which is currently mapped as a roundabout with intersecting roads.

However, it’s not actually a roundabout as far as I can tell, can’t see any roundabout signs on GSV,and another editor (ally_b() confirms this in their comments on the UR.

I have driven this junction myself a few times, and must admit to not being confused etc by the voice directions, but can see how they may be misleading.

Would a more senior editor mind having a look and recommending some improvements?

I’m thinking maybe the roundabout should be removed, and that these 2 sections should just be a straight road (Permalink), and the same on the other side of the ‘roundabout’. Then join them with one way roads replacing the existing roundabout curves if that makes sense.

Any comments? Or is it just better to leave alone

Thanks

You could always see how they like it simplified

I’m not sure whether to take you seriously or not!

That looks too simple to me, and I think that’ll probably cause reports for people joining from the A5101 Park Avenue N, what do you think?

I never jest when simplifying… it fits all the basic turn instructions, if the reporters are expecting lane guidance then I shouldn’t be consulted. I highly recommend you await advice from others that know more than myself.

[rant] I hate (with a big hate) roundabouts with traffic lights. The road planners should make up their minds what it is and design it appropriately. These are a complete cop out when they can’t think of a proper way to lay out a junction. They usually happen when a road planner (or someone more senior than him/her) uses the original roundabout and no one will let them out! [rant over]

More seriously, this is not a roundabout in the way it is now set up and needs re-drawing to give normal directions. I like the simplicity of atrophicshiner’s suggestion, but have not been through it completely to make sure it would work.

Bump

Any more views/comments before I have a go at redrawing this? Thanks

Well, it’s clearly not a roundabout so it does need some work.

I think Chris’ simple layout about may well be the best solution as we will only want one instruction at each corner of the junction and none of the turn/filter lanes are very long or deviate enough to cause any MPs or GPS issues
… but …
I would add a few TIOs to fine tune some of the instructions

  • some of the Turn Rights around the centre island would be better as Keep Rights
e.g heading S and staying on Kettering Rd ; Keep Right, then Turn Left.
  • suppress unnecessary instructions
e.g when joining from Park Ave N do you need an initial Turn Left if that’s the only option here.
  • consider using Continue instruction if helpful when leaving the junction straight ahead
e.g heading S from Kettering Rd onto Park Ave N

Thanks, appreciate the advice.

I think I’m going to leave it to the weekend and attempt it then, just in case I have any issues and need to call on a senior editor for help. I don’t want to start it, have issues and then have to leave it and go to work!

Ok, I’ve had a go at this, hopefully not messed it up too badly!!!

I tried where I could to use the existing rounds/roundabout segments to keep the traffic data.

I’ve also put a few TIO overrides on some turns, but I think they probably need a bit of additional tidying up

For some reason, toolbox is highlighting this segment (Permalink) and I’m not sure why…any ideas? Edit - was the speed limit, I’ve set it now

Appreciate it if a higher level editor could review. Thank you

Had some assistance from @Ianinessex, so all now done

Thanks Ian
