Roundabout landmarks - UK

What’s the feeling about using landmarks for named roundabouts, similar to how the Wiki uses them for labelling motorway junctions?

Certainly in Salisbury, the local radio station uses roundabout names extensively during traffic reports.

I already do that! Even better now that landmarks snap to roads!

I’m doing this too. for example, there is a blue house roundabout in newcastle. local ppl will know it and radio traffic report will use its name too.

Okey dokey.

I should really add it to the wiki I guess.

The alternative is to name the roundabout roads. While the (UK) Wiki says we should leave them blank because it might break navigation, I don’t think this is actually proven. In fact, one or two people on the forum have stated that named roundabouts work just fine.

Also, Landmarks should only be added to large roundabouts, with a radius greater than 20 or 30 metres. Smaller than that and they won’t appear on the client (not sure what the exact threshold or practical limit is).

I also use landmarks for bigger named roundabouts. I don’t label the roads on a roundabout as when driving towards a roundabout I think it’s better to see the name of the exit road not the roundabout name on the client.

Exactly - it’s not about breaking the navigation so much as seeing what the exit road is!

It doesn’t “break” navigation. The problem is the roundabout road will be listed as your next road, which is entirely wrong during navigation. As you approach a roundabout you’ll be told to take the third exit onto Some Roundabout, rather than taking the third exit to Road Name, which is what you actually need to know for the nav.
Naming the roundabout is for visual recognition only and should not interfere with navigation. Naming the actual roads gets in the way imo.

In that case, I can see why we don’t want to name the roundabout roads. I just wanted to make sure.

Carry on!

hmm…I used to name roundabout but starting to ‘de-name’ them. Just for sure, does the nav tell you the road name of roundabout? I found it does happen. Well, I’ll try to test it for sure.

Yes as for the reasons stated by Bain we shouldn’t be naming them at all. Just use landmarks

I keep finding roundabouts that I’ve created without adding the road name or number that now sport the number anyway. This happens if I lock the segments or not ;( it’s annoying as I am very meticulous about getting roundabouts just so. Makes it look like I’m doing the editing wrong if anyone else looks in. If you find one that has been numbered that I’ve created it is the work of someone else or an automated system.

It’s a bit better/worse (delete as required) again today

So you show as the last week editor? How odd.

Hi,

I have had b****y odd things happen in the past, and not just to roundabouts. But in my case it looked like waze re-imported base map info over edits and changes I had made to fix the base map imports in the first place.
I never got a suitable explanation as to how or why “admin -1” or “admin6” had changed sections and pieces I KNEW I had fixed previously.
Dates for the changes showed up as 1/1/70. It was as if all my changes had been deleted.
Probably database corruption that waze couldn’t explain or didn’t wish to acknowledge/explain.

Annoyed me no end.

Des. . .

Would make sense, db corruption and then a “oh shit…let’s import the basemap again in that small area…whoops the whole thing went in again” sound familiar anyone?
