Re: ICAO identifiers for runway names
There seems no remaining controversy about removing the airport identifier from runway naming. I liked them as landmarks for editing (with actual landmarks turned off) because runways are big and pretty obvious. Of course, I liked the ICAO identifier too. So the idea that the "airport identifi...

Re: Road Types (USA) – Airports and Surrounding Area
... the Road Types (USA) section still advises editors to name runways with the airport identifier (SJC, JFK, etc.) in the beginning. Didn't we decide that practice could result in undesired population of autocomplete lists with runways? If that's true, that's a good reason not to use IATA for runw...

Re: private roads on airport that are not taxiways
It seems that the primary problem with mapping roads even as Private is that Waze will use it if it thinks that it is necessary to traverse it to get as close as possible to the destination which is not necessarily a "destination marker" as the article states, but might even be a point tha...

Re: Road Types (USA) – Airports and Surrounding Area
I posted a permalink to JFK airport in NYC on March 16th, you could also just check the sat view at any major airport. Those markings are on the taxiway at the hold short line before the runway. They are not on the runway. Hyphens are the international standard. The pavement marking on the taxiway ...

Re: flying cars
Soon it could be often. But we're driving in circles. People can and do pave while the plane is taxiing, taking off, and landing. Having the runways mapped, named, locked, and not connected prevents or deters a lot of problems that otherwise would keep coming back. There is a single international co...

Re: Road Types (USA) – Airports and Surrounding Area
I double checked with the aforementioned Air Traffic Controller, and, while runways are indeed painted with hyphens (visible from the air, and something a driver should never see, in normal usage) standard terminology in FAA guidance for ATCs (and perhaps others) uses slashes. Pilots apparently get...

He was mistaken. I have never seen a slash.tonestertm wrote:...(confirmed with an Air Traffic Controller that slashes are standard naming).
The only acceptable form is with a hyphen.

We use a hyphen, not a slant.voludu2 wrote:Examples which could occur at the same airport include "03L/21R", "03C/21C", "03R/21L"

Re: Stuck on the interstate going the wrong direction
Just out of curiosity, don't Interstates require a grade-separated crossing and full interchange at least once every 20 miles (or something like that) for like just in case someone needs to turn around? Such a rule certainly has not always been followed. I'm pretty sure that I've seen a segment of ...

Re: Should Waze fix a driver's mistake?
I do agree that if you hit the Interstate and realize you forgot to turn off the oven, you would have a long "detour" to get back home without the turnaround. But do you really need Waze routing for that? True story: It happened to me. I unintentionally joined the interstate while scoutin...
