Frontage roads

Post by ircphoenix
So in my area I have a street that runs parallel to a smaller street.. the main thoroughfare is for through traffic. The smaller street is separated from the roadway by a small median, but named the same as the thoroughfare. I'm wondering if I should use a service road or a regular street to properly route Waze, should someone need to get to one of the residences on the frontage road. My assumption is to keep the thoroughfare a "primary street" and make the frontage road just a normal street, but I don't know how Waze is going to interpret those changes. I'm also going to unsplit the road.

Anyway... here's the permalink. The street in question is Palos Verdes Dr S. https://descartes.waze.com/live/?zoom=6 ... TTTTTTTTTT

Service Road is the road type designed (at one point in time) for what we call frontage roads.

Also listed on the Map Legend page, but most vet editors have issues with the way that page was written.

I was told/read that Service Road has no significant penalty, especially compared to Parking Lot and Private Road. If that is the only way to get to a certain address or destination, then the penalty really doesn't make a difference because any other route doesn't exist so that penalty is essentially infinite.

In general, I think frontage roads are to carry load and to have local street addresses which don't exist on the main drag. Since this isn't clear, I'd say it's your call.

I have no direct experience with service roads so I am unsure. If I were doing this, I would give it the same name and put the house numbers on it and see what happens after the client gets the refresh.

I mostly set them as normal streets. Around here, some of those are closed for non-local trafic (residents only). In that case, I set them to Service road, as this type has a high penalty for routing.

I agree, change it to service road. We have these around here and as already pointed out, this is exactly what the service road type is for.

And resist the urge to name it 'Palos Verdes Dr S (frontage)' as some of these roads are named around my area. It's just 'Palos Verdes Dr S'.

Did I say one frontage road? It actually has a frontage road on each side. I think I'm gonna go with the Primary and "normal" thing until it breaks something.

Thanks for the help!

I saw that, but was thrown off by the whole freeway/"major" highway adjacent part. I understand that a highway is technically any public street, but again, I don't know how Waze weighs these things, so I figured the best workaround would be to do the primary/regular thing. Are you saying using a service road in this case would be the best move?

But the question I have is if I use a service road, and a wazer plugs in the address, will waze be able to figure out that the service road is the road with the addresses on it, not the primary street?

Looks like it. I asked for directions to 7000 Troy Pike, Huber Heights, OH in Cartouche and it took me to the address on the service road here. Both it and the main highway next to it are called Troy Pike.
