Hi all

I've been doing a bit of over the border work ;) and have come across this rather curious anomaly. Does anyone have any thoughts as it's confusing the hell out of me. The only thing I can think is that we are about to get Counties, or translates or some other old 'coming soon' promise...

Hi Pip, David, Yanis,

Good morning and a happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous 2015.

Since 2012 Google has been involved in an initiative concerning endangered languages. See http://www.endangeredlanguages.com
I participate!

We have Google Phost (gMail); Google Search as Gaeilge etc.
There are other initiatives.

I expect that the Gaelic version is displayed because a Google algorithm kicks in at a certain zoom level though I cannot presently confirm.

I carried out some extensive editing following a field trip to Monaghan in November 2014 because it was a vital area that was missing considerable detail. I did place the Gaelic name in in a few segments as an alternative City name but they have disappeared. It may have been a precursor!

Some of the work I completed has disappeared and other segments recreated. I expect Waze have had a tile mapping issue.

I will make some enquiries and will keep you posted on developments.

Am I still correct in assuming that roundabouts should not have City and Street segment naming?

All the best and have a good weekend,

Sláinte (Good Health)

Arthur.

Thanks Pip,

Waze is in constant development and elicits data from many sources. - in this instance GoogleMaps.

Search Muineachan on your client navigator and you will see!

Best wishes,

Arthur.

Evening David,

Thank you. I also tend to do likewise but in main remove city name as well especially on roundabouts that are a bit removed from a city/town.

All the best,

Arthur.

Yep,
There are still maybe a few I think.
Had to laugh at the City size for Ballivor, Co. Meath at one time - bigger than Dublin. There was also another small town as big again in Co. Galway.
Overall though think we're doing a reasonable job to keep accuracy as good as possible.

Hope you're keeping well.

Arthur.

The Three Wise Men! LOL.

Local knowledge, field trips, and interaction with local people, especially those involved in historical societies, local police and council/city offices representatives, still the best way for me. I've developed a great affiliation with roads staff in practically every county and city council. I find them brilliant - could not be more helpful. As a matter of fact most invite me now to new road openings and even turning the sod on commencement of new builds.

The other way is to rely on local editors, even those who are not so active. Developing and interaction facilities the ability to make an inquiry, which in the main is usually answered over time.

Luckily Ireland is so small in scale!

Cheers,

Arthur.

I was working on the map around Carrickmacross in mid-December, and I noticed this too.

At first I thought it was somebody giving some road segments their English city name, and some their Irish name, thus resulting in what would look like two different cities, each with a name in a different language, however when I went looking for road segments with a city name of "Muineachan" I couldn't find any, so I shook my head in bewilderment and moved on.

I sometimes get the feeling that the city names shown on the live map aren't 100% drawn from the cities in the editor, but might partly come from other sources. I haven't found any evidence to substantiate this, however.

Short answer: I've noticed this too, but I don't have an explanation! Anybode else?

That's my belief, yes. A city name on roundabouts is harmless (I don't add it, but I also don't remove it if I come across it) but a street name on roundabouts can confuse the TTS directions given to the user when navigating and also looks a bit funny on the map display - so I never add a street name to a roundabout and often remove it when I come across it if I'm doing other work in the area.

Good point - I should have said that I remove the city name from any segment of any type that's not actually within the limits of the city/town/village that has that name, so as to avoid cities/towns/villages that appear on the map that are much larger than the actual settlement, or to avoid settlements that don't actually exist at all. (sometimes I notice novice editors give segments a city name because they think it has to have one or because they think a segment should have a city name for the city/town/village that is nearby, even though the segment might not actually be inside the settlement).

'morning Pip,
seriousarsonist wrote:Have we any new data sources for the naming of roads? or are we still using the LPS?
LPS?

I'm still using road number (where known, which it almost always is for M-, N- and R- roads, and where visible either in person or in Street View for L- roads) combined with road name (if there is one and it's known). For rural roads (of type street or primary street, but not higher) outside towns and villages where there isn't an actual known road name, I use the name of the townland that the road passes through, and I get the townland boundaries from the OSI online maps.

Ah that would be up here, Local Planning Service. I meant to say OSI...
Aha. Not Land and Property Services? (going by what Wikipedia says happened seven years ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordnance_S ... rn_Ireland )
