Pip speaks the truth; the conference is this coming weekend. Although it's nominally a UK conference, there are a couple of representatives going to it from Ireland. We share a lot of similar concerns, mapping practices and road types, so many questions from Ireland are well worth raising here.

So do post your questions to the conference thread in the UK forum; it's one of our few chances to get in touch with people from Waze HQ.

For anybody reading here who's wondering what happened at the conference, especially for things that affect us here in Ireland:

  • First, have a look at the last few posts in this thread on the UK forum. There should be something posted soon about what went on. A few people are complaining about the lack of information about the conference, although Timbones has promised to post something. Part of the reason for the lack of information is that a lot of the information the Waze staff gave was confidential to Waze, and we were told not to share it around.
  • Some of the things at the conference were UK-specific, such as some of the discussion around some routing problems that happen in some junction types that are common in the UK but not in Ireland (double mini-roundabouts).
  • From an Ireland point of view, the biggest thing to come out of the conference was the start of self management for Ireland. The first change resulting from this is that area manager applications are now handled locally, but there should be more changes to come. I'll post about those when they happen.
  • Since we use UK English most of the time, we should take note of any problems with TTS in Ireland, since I now have contact details for the UK localisation champ. If there are any TTS problems, he can probably help to resolve them. The main thing we can't do much about is the TTS pronunciation of Irish placenames though...
  • The Waze wiki is being replaced. Although we don't have many Irish wiki pages, we do need to arrange for our existing pages to be moved over to the new wiki. We should probably write some more wiki pages too.
  • COUNTIES: the UK has had county support for some time, and that's coming soon to Ireland. That means that each road segment can have a county as well as just a name, and we won't have to have the county name in brackets after town names where there's more than one town with the same name. Timbones is helping with that. Watch this space...
I think that's everything, although I could probably have made more detailed notes. Arthur O'Hara was there too, so he might be able to remember some more details.

In any case, watch the thread in the UK forum for a post from Timbones.
