Editing collaboration

Post by davidg666
Hello,

I'm (relatively) new here but I've become rather addicted to map editing and recently got area manager for most of Dublin and north Wicklow.

Anyway, I notice several other map editors (arthurohara, lleyden, zzemca, among others (I'm sure I'm forgetting several)) who are very active around the same areas as me and I propose that we all cooperate where possible and use this forum to discuss best practices for how best to edit certain things (such as complicated junctions, new territory and so on). I've changed a couple of junctions in some places so that the client will hopefully give clearer navigation instructions, but I notice that others sometimes like to arrange them a little differently.

I suggest a new forum post each time a tricky editing problem comes up.

If I get any positive feedback to this post, then I'll start doing just that.

Hey all,

Today I've done most Editing with Waze so far. Will see if I didn't mess up someone's work
Traveled today to Monaghan and Scotstown, so as a reminder for myself I drew roads around the Scotstown together with Landmarks of objects where I was at.

I am not feeling comfortable enough adding names or deciding where roads starts and ends as I can't understand by what criteria they are marked :? As an example, you can see in Scotstown, they have a road called "Bog road". Surprisingly it goes in pretty much all directions from and to town (East, South, West...) I believe this is mistake in Google map, but frankly, not the first time I see roads going in different directions (more than Two) with same name.

So, to sum up what I mean by my post:
Is it OK that I draw the roads with out names? Or little effort is worse than none, because someone else will have trouble editing my roads?

Thanks
P.S. I'm not an Irish... I'm Lithuanian

Thanks. That means I won't use Google Map road names.

Hi,

I don't know how to drop in a link to an Edition place... maybe u can find it by ID...
I've paved and now created one road between N81 and Ballymore City. It is L2025. I've marked it as Primary Road and Level 0... although roads around it are marked with Minor Highway and Level 4 or 1... Sorry If i made something wrong. U are more than welcome to edit it as it should be.

Hi David,

I would be in favour of your proposal and willing to be open, frank and forthcoming about any editing I conduct and happy to discuss difficult problems arising. I may not be able to answer promptly because the earning job does take precedence, naturally in light of the fiscal fiasco our country is presently afflicted by.

I think it is a great idea for the general betterment of Waze in Ireland. Perhaps we could re-title this post as "Editing Collaboration Ireland".

I would encourage everyone to openly take part, especially those with the most experience and be prepared to move forward in a spirit of co-operation.

I would agree that a new forum post be made in respect of each editing problem arising.

Like yourself I'm relatively new and have a lot of learning to do. Its an ongoing process, all about practice. There will be mistakes but, its only by mistakes we learn. I don't like the old editor and find it a little unwieldy. The sooner additional functions are added to the new one the better. There are other issues that cause frustration. The most frustrating one for me is locked road segments.

Good luck,

Arthur.

Hi Davercade,

Greetings! In so far as I'm concerned new Editors like yourself are very welcome!

I strongly feel that we are doing something for the "Common Good" out there on the road.

We all had to start somewhere and make mistakes, otherwise we would never learn.

Without sounding in any way presumptuous, I will be delighted to be of assistance and collaborate with you. Don't hesitate to get in touch.

I posted this elsewhere on the forum, but thought it worthwhile to reiterate here, as I see a lot of new editors in the Munster area recently.
Arthur's links above are vital to check, as is:
Before making any additions or edits to the map, you will find it very useful to:
Watch the Waze editing videos on YouTube and on the Editor.
Read the Waze wiki on road naming and road typing rules specific to Ireland.

Also especially important to make sure junctions are correct at end of each new road segment: creating a segment in and of itself doesn't ensure correct junctions.

This all saves many hours of trying to remember and retrospectively fix all your new edits if you discover an error in your methodology.

Hi all,

Literally brand new to Waze and very excited! I'm based in Kildare but the job takes me all over!

I've watched the videos and edited (very small edits, no road names etc just yet) some of the smaller roads in my area.

For the moment I am right in saying that just driving around with Waze running is a help to all, naturally I'd prefer this until I'm properly comfortable editing and helping out!

Looking forward to being a part of something that will be a help to all!

Hi Agamicox,

Just a quick reply on one thing you mentioned:

Even though it's inconvenient, we must not use Google Maps (or similar) to get the names of roads in the Waze map - we can only use publicly-known sources. So it's OK to use Google Street View to look at road signs that are there in the physical world, but we can't legally copy Google's road name data. This is possibly a good thing from one point of view, because I notice it's often incorrect anyway.
