Incredibly frustrating

Wazes is billed as a mapping system that users can alter and build but in reality that function is open to so very very few. Unless you've made hundreds of thousands of edits and level 4 or 5 status forget it. There are lots of new developments in my area that need to be added but I cant because I cant link into the main network. There are locations that I know of where the road and footpath is out in the sea which I cant change because one needs level 5 status to adjust a coast line. In my job I actually process road closure orders yet I cant add this valuable information to the system as I have not got a high enough level.

A tip: Ask your Region Manager to have your status raised to Area Manager and level you up at the same time. Also, discuss further with your RM what can be done about this.

First, thanks for coming to the forum - we're all editing together here and want to help each other as much as possible.

Sorry about the frustrations you've run into. We do actually try to lock as little as possible, believe it or not! The reason the coast areas are locked at level 5 is that they all disappeared completely a couple of years ago - I'm not sure if they were deleted by mistake or what happened so we locked them after recreating them. (then, a few months later, the original bits of sea came back again - weird!)

Anyway, we do try to lock as few road segments as possible, and only when there's a good reason, but there might be a few that have slipped through the cracks. If you come across anything that's locked that looks like it shouldn't be, then please post to the unlock request subforum and we'll try to lower or remove the lock as soon as possible.

So yeah - sorry about the frustrations. Feel free to post here or to send a message to me or another editor any time you run into a problem, and we'll sort it out as soon as possible. The map depends a lot on the contributions of all editors, yourself included, and as I'm sure you've seen the map here in Ireland needs a lot of work in places, so we want to help everybody.

Hi Stephen,

Main reason for the locks would be to prevent over zealous users changing the like of the M50 or other main roads. Another reason can be because the data on google street view could be out of date too and an editor may not know that if they are not familiar with an are.

What I would say is keep edit what you can and then if you come across any roads that are locked above your level then request an unlock here and one of the Level 4 or 5 editors will unlock while you make the changes.

thanks

Hi Stephen,
As daghb stated you can request roads be down-locked to your level. This is best done through the state or country forums whichever applies to you. You can find the forums for your area here:

The lock levels are to protect the roadway system. The higher level editors will ask what you plan on doing and if necessary will give you guidance and then review the work before locking it back up. We encourage new editors to get involved. Just do it in conjunction with your area's editors.
Good Luck!
Ron
