WME: junction boxes

Post by davidg666
So, I thought junction boxes weren't available or working in the editor yet, however I just tried to create one and it worked! (creating it, that is - we'll see if the routing works after the next map update).

For those of you who haven't heard of them, a junction box is a feature that's been coming "soon" for a few years now. It makes setting turn restrictions on very large and complicated junctions much easier. Instead of trying to set the turn restrictions for each node within the junction, you can define which paths through the junction can be used for every combination of road segments entering and exiting the junction. This is handy for stopping U-turns where two dual carriageways cross, for example, which isn't otherwise possible when a junction is shaped like a '#'

There are probably better explanations of what a junction box is elsewhere, but I haven't been able to find them. If anybody can find a good explanation then please post it here.

It looks like junction boxes are locked to L5 though, and I can't lower the lock level on the junction box I've just created, so please create an editor request for any complicated junction with routing issues that looks like it might benefit from a junction box.

Yes, here it is. (incidentally, the satellite images are a few years out of date here; that roundabout has been gone for a while) Thanks to JoSchoofs for asking about the UR that was there and how to fix it. The junction was originally #-shaped, but short of doing a mapcat bowtie (are they now ancient history?) I couldn't think of a good way of disabling U-turns here. (can anybody else?)

I don't advocate using junction boxes except where there's a good reason, especially since any segment that falls within a junction box can't be edited. I think they also can't be used with roundabouts, which is a shame, because if they were, then they could be used to stop roundabout bypass segments from being ignored.

There are 2 more of these junctions in Galway who may need extra restrictions a bit more east on the N6 :

https://www.waze.com/nl/editor/?env=row ... 081&zoom=5
As an Level 3 editor i have to leave this to the 5+ :) Feel free to practice with the junction boxes...
Thanks Jo. Can you explain what needs to change about these junctions - is it just no U-turns in any direction, or are there also other turn restrictions too?

(Street View is way out of date here (still shows roundabouts) and I probably won't be in Galway for a few months...)

I can't make the change straight way, as WME seems to have a temporary problem right now.

Hey David, I've read about them in the past, and they are only available for L5 editors.

If they work, they would be of great help for complicated junctions, mainly towards traffic stats as they ignore all small segments inside the box, and take the time required from points A to B (of the junction box).

Could you post a link of the one you created just to have a look around? :)
