Speed limit change for long-term road works

Post by YanisKyr
Hi guys, what's your opinion on this one?

From the reporter: "Roadworks on the M7 have extended on both sides to the M9 - M7 merge. This speed limit has dropped from 120kph to 60kph and is expected to stay like that till 2019. The merge from the M9 to the M7 has also dropped from 120kph to 60kph. This is affecting travel times heavily."

In my opinion we shouldn't be reflecting temporary speed limit changes, but this one is not so temporary.

Speed limit URs only appear in the beta WME:

I did notice (a few months ago) that another editor (not sure who) had updated the speed limits along at least part of the M7 where those works are to reflect the reduced limit during the works.

I think in general we shouldn't change speed limits for temporary changes because of road works except perhaps in cases such as this one where they change for a long time (many months or even over a year). However, whoever does change them should keep a close eye on them and check them regularly so that they get changed back as soon as the works are over. It's not sufficient to notice that they've changed at the start of a construction job and then forget about them: they must be changed back later.

Reminders are definitely a good idea, but the ideal way to stay on top of things is to have some local knowledge - http://www.m7upgrade.com/ only seems to get updated every few months.

I don't think this project extends as far as the M9, does it?

Excellent!

Do you think the same reporter would be amenable to providing updates on the Sallins bypass part of the project (which involves a new interchange on the M7, the bypass itself, a new roundabout on the Sallins<->Clane road, four points where the bypass attaches to existing roads (the M7, the road network in Naas, the new roundabout in Sallins and one more point in Sallins) and geometry changes to minor roads west of Sallins?

I'm tracking the progress of this bypass, but since I don't live nearby, I'm doing most of this remotely. The geometry changes I can do with GPS tracks in WME, but it would be handy to know when the various attachment points are joined to the existing network, any time traffic is rerouted during construction, and, of course, when various parts of the project open to the public.

Once the project nears completion, I hope to get an actual opening date so that I can set up closures to expire at the moment of opening. That way Waze should be able to route over the bypass starting at the moment it opens.

Sounds good, we should keep an eye on it through this thread and the CM Trello - what do you think?

The official page of the M7 upgrade (http://www.m7upgrade.com/) has information about the the M7 speed limit change, and it seems to be a simple stretch from J8-J11. I will enquire with them for M9, and keep this thread updated.

That was my understanding from the website too, but it does affect M9 too according to the reporter:

Roadworks on the M7 have extended on both sides to the M9 - M7 merge. This speed limit has dropped from 120kph to 60kph and is expected to stay like that till 2019. The merge from the M9 to the M7 has also dropped from 120kph to 60kph.
