Odd routing from R111 Dolphin Rd to R812 Davitt Rd

Post by foophoof
I was driving out of the city yesterday and Waze told me to me to take a bit of an odd route through this intersection (tried to emulate by selecting the segments it wanted me to take):

I ended up just continuing straight down Dolphin Rd, and sure enough, there's a dedicated arrow on the signal to turn onto Davitt Rd. I'm not too familiar with things like this, where it seems Waze has the "correct" view of the roads, but decides on a weird routing.

If you use the Live Map to look at the routing, it seems to depend on the time of day:

During the day, it uses what most would consider the correct way. The odd way seems to be preferred at off peak times....

Hi there, the route is legal so the routing server was probably trying to be smart and save you time.

I've experienced situations where this kind of alternatives ultimately cost you time though, and I believe it's down to insufficient traffic stats for those segments.
