Solid White Lines

Post by Technic_Lee
Is it ever acceptable to turn over a Solid White Line?
The question comes up as there are numerous examples in Dublin of mismatching information from lack of signage, or allowed but restricted turns, when turning right over a Solid White Line.
eg. https://goo.gl/maps/rXfUHBAo5r8vWKYj9

Is it permitted if there is no signage restricting the turn?

Likewise, can you turn right from a minor road to a major road over a Solid White Line?

Is it permitted to access a Driveway? And is it the same into a dropped-kerb cue-de-sac or other small street?

Finally, (I know... too many questions) Can you ever legally u-turn over a solid white?

Thanks all.

This is mostly my opinion, combined with what I *think* the law/rules of the road say:

It's *normally* not acceptable to cross a solid white line, especially on a multi lane road or out of a side road. With side roads, if it's allowed, the solid white line *should* be broken and *usually* is. This is the case whether or not there's a sign.

For a driveway (or similar), I'd say it's technically not allowed, but there are probably many cases where it's kinda OK (even if not strictly legal), if it's on a quiet road. If it's a busy or wide road, then better to avoid if possible.

For the purposes of Waze mapping: I'd just about always map a turn as not allowed if there's no break in the solid white line, unless the break looks like it's absent because of a mistake in the road markings. I imagine it's possible for a business like a petrol station (which we would map) to be created but for the solid white line not to be changed. Again though, if it's a wide or busy road, then it's not allowed.

I know in practice many drivers just don't care, but that doesn't mean Waze should encourage them to not care :)

I think that in the case of an accident, insurance companies are going to look for any excuse not to pay out, and if a driver crossed a solid line and caused an accident, the insurer will try very hard to claim it was that driver's fault.

See http://www.rsa.ie - specifically: https://www.rsa.ie/Documents/RotR%20BOO ... 202019.pdf ... not sure why there isn't a non-PDF version. Well, maybe there is, but a quick search didn't find it.

After a quick read, I don't know much more than I did earlier :)

Huh - I had no idea of this distinction! I always assumed that the UK rules were probably almost identical to the rules here.

One thing that always confused me about driving on the continent is the rule that traffic entering a road from your right (equivalent to coming from the left here or in the UK) has right of way by default. This is crazy! Luckily on main roads there's usually a diamond sign that gives you right of way, but you have to look for it...

You can never do a U turn across a solid line. :o

Just another example that's popped up. This user OrlaFaughnan petitioned for the yellow box placed in 2016. Ideally residents could turn into the street, but with more mixed messages about whether a turn is legal we need to find a right or wrong.

Thank you EVERYONE for the responses. Hopefully we're getting closer here...

Ian, I too am from the UK. Only moved to Dublin a year ago so assumed a lot from the Highway Code. But of course there will be distinct differences, and with confusion of permissions and priorities come crashes... And yeah, I thumbed through the RSA Rules of the Road too hoping to find answers but am still confused.

That reminds me, I sent this particular example to our contact in Dublin City Council, but haven't heard anything back. Might write a follow up now and schedule it to go out after the holidays.
