Waze staff mapraid coming

Post by davidg666
Next Sunday (February 2), Waze is having a mapraid for its own staff, from 1200 to 1500 Irish time. If you're editing around this time, you may see the staff editors at work, or oyu may see the results of their work after this time. If you're online on Slack at the time, you can help out, if you want:
All the participants in this mapraid will be staff members, SCM and WME dev team
All of us have edited the map before, and know how to edit, yet, we don't have many opportunities to do so. We believe that the mapraid will give us some more knowledge which will help us to keep our mind fresh around mapping and the community day to day effort with the WME, and might help to move the needle around fixing some of the issues you raised.

How is this going to work?

On sunday, Feb 2nd 14:00-17:00 (IL time), we will have the 'hackathon' (AKA mapraid) where all the relevant staff members will take part in.
We will map in the defined area, with everything that needs to be done there in order to improve the map in the area + will do our best to practice some tasks we will be giving the team ( i.e add at least one JB).
Few weeks ago, we posted about this mapraid, and asked for volunteers to mentor us during the mapraid ( and we have 20 high level editors from around the globe to support us via hang out or slack)
This will be the time to emphasise that all mapping will be done based on the local editing roles - and therefore as you said, if some of you are willing to help with it - that will be greatly appreciated.

How can you help?

Share with us a defined polygon of which area you'll want us to help you with mapping.
Share with us all the tasks you need us to help with ( adding new roads, verifying speed limits and handling URs - is perfect for us) - it is ok to say - JUST MAP!
We will be mapping based on the editing roles in your local Wazopedia page, so if there is something you wish to emphasise please do so.
Inform the community we are about to have this mapraid, and maybe if possible, share your local slack channel link with us, so if needed we will ask for advice in it.

OK - we got some stats and a heat map about the mapraid back from HQ:
54 map problems were resolved
56 places were updated
1,095 segments were edited
1,501 new segments were created

With that we managed to improve the Irish map freshness score by 4.8% from 54.59 to 57.21.

You can also see this change in the country segments density heat map:
