Questionable Editing Feat Dublin 2 Wed 27 Feb 2013

Post by arthurohara
In the space of approximately five minutes this evening Wed 27 February 2013, 1474 edits were recorded in the general Dublin 2 area on the segments indicated below without apparently enhancing anything on the actual Waze map. There are tell-tale factors that strongly indicates the edits were not conducted with a human touch and did not enhance the map. A roundabout on the S Circular Rd was left incomplete (without obviously forming a proper circle). I doubt very much this would have been left in this way if there was human intervention. The fact thirty eight segments were recorded as edited in such a short space of time also breaks possible normal editing timelines, as does the fact differently named segments (5) were edited at the exact same second.

The above is but a sample of similar edits that have also been performed close to the same time this evening in the Dublin area that do not seem to further enhance the map.

I'm concerned that the map might suffer damage.

Any observations would be appreciated.

Tomorrows scoreboard will tell its own tale!

Waze, for the common good out there on the road.

I'm not sure where you got the number of 1474 from (that's a big number - how is that possible?) but I am responsible for the edits in the list you gave.

These edits were made by a human (me; I am a human). If I damaged a roundabout then that was certainly accidental, and for that I apologise.

Most of the other edits were me releasing the locks on these roads along the canal, because I was of the opinion that the locks were unnecessary and would hinder other editors from working on those roads.

A couple of edits (for example, the two Adelaide Road segments) were to fix an incorrect turn restriction.

This is my observation. Aside from the roundabout, I claim that no damage was done, some map errors were fixed, and legitimate editing was made easier (releasing the locks). This was certainly not an attempt to gain points and nor was it frivolous. If you think that some of the edits were unnecessary then that's a matter of opinion, and if you like we can agree to disagree.

Another observation: the edit time on a segment shows the time changes to that segment were *saved*, Consequently, if a number of edits are made over a period of time and then saved, they will all have the same (or nearly the same, depending on how long the save takes) apparent modification time.

Therefore, it's quite normal, possible and reasonable for a number of differently-named segments to have exactly the same modification date. Try it and see for yourself next time you're editing: change three different segments, leaving a minute between each one, then hit save, and see what modification time they have. It's possible to make dozens of edits and then save them all in one go, giving them all the same (or nearly the same) modification date. I expect that this is what you're seeing here.
