Comments for "Daily Processes temporarily halted..."

Postby AlanOfTheBerg » Sat Oct 22, 2011 2:06 am

Fej posted the following in the Daily Processes temporarily halted due to system overload thread. This thread is for comments and discussions related to this announcement.
Fej wrote:We are temporarily halting the daily processes that digest the routes driven as well as updates the map and client tiles.

This is due to the enormous load we are experiencing with the current featuring of version 3.0. and in order to enable us to preserve the real-time service, while delaying the off-line related services until the surge is reduced to a more manageable rate.

There is no loss of any data, but there will be a delay in presenting archived routes, calculating points, as well as compiling the map editing updates.

Further to the release of version 3.0 (Android version to be released as well), our efforts and thoughts are now concentrated on the infrastructure and scaling related issues and processes so as to achieve the goal of the 24 hour cycle. This includes redesign and development of major components such as the drive merging process and the tile creation which is estimated to take several weeks to complete.

Our goal is to enable and sustain any growth in usage and users and we will keep you informed of the progress and planned activities.

True, but it is about paying for and getting reliable compute services from their provider. Public cloud computing can be an unpredictable thing... I'd love to see them someday offload processing to clients like OSM. That's a huge, relatively free resource they could tap in to. I stopped looking for aliens a long time ago...

That process appears to still be online and it's more the merger and trace processes that are offline and being rewritten.

They need to offload the points calculation to a completely different, parallel process. I may not understand it all fully, but it seems to me that points calculation for raw miles driven, candies, etc should be easy to add up quickly. What needs more calculation is new road recording and munching before points can be posted.

slshow1 wrote:Has anyone seen updates yet? It's now Wednesday and I haven't seen a thing. I know they said they would roll them out over 3-4 days. Just curious if the updates have really begun. Here's hoping.

No, but I don't expect to see my points or edits show up for a week or two. To me, that means they are really concentrating on fixing the code rather than just manually running the update processes. I want all of them working on the code optimization and bug fixing which has been a continual problem for over a year, rather than having some of them still tinkering with manual updates.

Still down, maybe one of the less important things :?

It's indeed frustrating to wait for a tiles update, i have done tons of edits these days. And more work must be done, after the client tiles have been updated. I'm sure a few of the new users have recorded roads in these Areas :-)

But no reason to quit.

I understand it may look frustrating, but I would say "take it easy" ..... and don't forget a baby takes 9 month to born....
