Has this been fixed? It's driving me crazy where I live... I've updated the map to show "N" St, do you know is this is the fix?

"N st" vs "North st", spoken street name abbreviations

Postby BrianCanFixIT » Sun Jan 01, 2012 3:43 am

Is there something I need to do to have waze differentiate between "N" & "North" when editing roads?
The client frequently calls "N st" "North Street" erroneously...
I don't know if "S st" translates to "South street", "E st" to "East street", etc...
If it's stuck at N->North; I propose the following:
a) Change the model for naming abbreviations to use a period after each abbreviation, eg: "N." as "North".
b) Have waze push a DB change to rename current abbreviations "N", etc to "N.", etc.

This actually brings me to my second question: Is there a list on the wiki of what gets verbally translated at the client side to what?
N->North
Bus->Business
rd->Road
...

And my final question: How can one get a naming convention added?
Co->County
CR->County Road
Prky->Parkway (This one may actually already exist)

PS: I tried searching the forums for this, but the search function suxors...

According to the wiki http://es.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Known_issues we should not use quotes.
Avoid entering names using single and double quotation marks.
as they are "not handled correctly" in Cartouche.
Is this still applicable?

BTW the standard abbreviation in general and as used in Waze for Parkway is Pkwy not Prky.

"N st" vs "North st", spoken street name abbreviations

Maybe try these street names is quotes?

"N" St
"S" St

Yes, will look a bit odd but may be worth trying one to see how the TTS responds.

Not that it helps in any way in the pronunciation, but single quotes are actually used on the signs.

Single quote seems like another option to try. Surely no standard across every local government, city, or state though.

Although I suspect the single quote gets pronounced as 'raised to the power...' by the TTS. So I would try the standard quotation marks first - "

I took that to mean that you shouldn't have a street name with both single and double quotes. Such as
Bob "Squeaky" Abercrombie's Ln

Known issues which we users want to push for a discussion with Waze staff at the meeting in January.

Also try searching for "TTS" (Text to Speech).
