Waze now illegal to use in France. Is your country next?

Post by Rokcet
France has introduced some new rules for road warriors. One is that every car is required to have 2 functional breathalyzers on board. Another is that devices with navigation software that report speed traps and red light cameras are prohibited to even be carried in cars! Let alone switched on!

So Waze is now officially illegal in France.

...and, in France, you will still get a huge fine! Because it is illegal to have a device – no matter whether it is switched on or off – with navigation capabilities including speedtrap notification or information IN YOUR CAR.

So disabling speedtrap functionality is not enough! If you have an app like Waze on your device and in your car, in whatever condition, you are culpable.

So now we wait for some idiot to duct tape his device, with Waze running, to his OUTSIDE rearview mirror believing this law does not apply to him.

Yep! For instance countries that have a deficit and 'need' the extra 'revenue' from fines to alleviate budget problems.
And what country today does NOT have a deficit/budget problem!

They are allowed to.
They are not.

Brshk1 wrote:And why completely wipe out the speed cam alert functionality? I remember some commercial solutions that implemented a panic button for countries where speedcam alerts are illegal. If you press it, it deletes the speed cam database, so you cannot be held liable for using such system.

For the adventurous French wazers and visitors, it could be an option in the settings menu. Let's say that if you swipe the speedometer to the left, it disables speed cam alerts until a special code is used.
The panic button is the 'lock' button on phones. Together with a lockscreen passcode, there's nothing they can do.

Rokcet: You have some wrong information.

GPS is run by the United States Air Force - not NASA. There are lots of extra US GPS satellites (31 in-orbit and Healthy), and the USAF is working on the 3rd generation constellation (36 more). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System And none of the other proposed Non-US GPS copies will work with the current cell phone technology (if at all). Those other imitating countries are not known to share as well as the US does with the rest of the world.
