Gang, there are different approaches to making a profit, capitalism doesn't mean squeezing everything you can out of everyone you can, and calling a situation where everybody wins socialism is just displaying ignorance. The Waze business model as I understood it was originally to give people something they wanted (good congestion avoidance) in trade for up-to-the-second congestion reporting, which could then be sold to others. Everybody profits. That changed as the user base changed, so that the map itself became more significant, they dabbled in other things they could monetize and even started selling advertising on the map, but congestion avoidance was still primary, and the deal you make with Waze was clear. The Facebook business model on the other hand started out as selling advertising and became confused and ad hoc. They've said they make it up as they go along. The trade you make with them is never clearly defined, but it certainly involves their allowing access to personal information that you may not have agreed to spread. Regardless of what FB says, their system leaks, a lot, and they are dangerous to privacy. This leakage can be controlled where you use a web browser to interact with them, but it cannot be controlled if you are constantly feeding information about yourself to them from a phone app.

DM, from my exploration it seemed to me that in the beginning they were experimenting, seeing what they could monetize, and that advertising didn't begin in earnest until at least a year in. But that's not the main point. I find it hard to believe you don't know about FB's problems with privacy and data leakage.

OK well, I guess we disagree. I believe my opinion is based on historical evidence. Thanks.

Dear Mark Z,
I want at minumum .25 cents for each edit I've contributed to your possibly acquired navigation program. So far that's $92,550. If you request that I continue to spend my personal time improving your product my rate will continue to be .25 cents per edit and also an additional $15 per hour. Thank you.
(If waze stays waze I will continue for free on my own enjoyment and desire to help humanity)

Nore Facebook than Google or Apple.
I came to waze to have a free gps app with traffic info paid by adds and my part in map editing
Don't want my drive to be linked to any part of the rest of my life
FB privacy settings are to difficult to understand and can be changed by FB so easily
(who had ever read each privacy policy release of FB or even waze's ones)

I' m not ready /don't want to give up privacy to get a more efficient waze

My friends I meet them IRL, no need of computerised social network for that

It's just à different level of involvement
Some drive with FB or Not
Some drive with FB or Not and edit (a lot)
Some drive, edit and are ready to go far away with FB
But we still have the choice

Later it could be FB or leave

In this mater I'm pro choice

dmcconachie,

As a waze champ (meaning you) I am kinda shocked by your lackadaisical attitude. I understand the logistics of the situation and I can't say I disagree, but c'mon man...we all have a lot of time invested in this project. Unless you're a facebook fan, I don't understand your defense :?
