Since you pointed that out, i've noticed it in quite a few places now. I know you can report the ghost segments & they'll get rid of one, but what i'm curious about is whether its anything we as map editors are doing that's creating the double ups?

If anyone knows of certain things we should avoid doing while editing that could help prevent it, i'm all ears! Nothing worse than doing a reasonably long road & then finding that you've connected it to a segment that has no other connections because its an overlaid road!

Firstly the city names seem to update slower on the editor than the client, so the city overlay can be wrong for some time and then one day it will just be correct. I keep thinking I should look into some way of adding a userscript to do something similar to the overlay but use road data instead.

And from what ive seen, its normally the result of a bad save, eg. one of those ones where the next save says while you were editing... which is normally from a response time out (would of course be nice if the first error message indicated that).
Ive also seen people say it used to happen a lot in the old editor, so may have been a bug they fixed.

The one thing I do know is that if you try and fix it yourself you will end up deleting both roads (when I first started I ended up doing this with a small segment of SH 3) or getting a 'while you were editing' error.

Ive been working on a userscript (well chrome extension) that will show you all the edits you have done without saving and allow you to select some not to be saved, while allowing the ones after to. Although since they have just updated the editor ill have to review how it all works again.

Either side of Himatangi there is a giant sliver called Carnarvon running roughly North-South. Flicking between the live map & update map is the easiest way to see it, the name seems to be associated with Foxton somehow. I've never even heard of the place, so am guessing its some tiny crossroads somewhere or something. I tried renaming the roads, removing that city name but that hasn't helped - its still there.

Again around Himatangi, this time running East-West, the town seems to extend all the way from Opiki to the coast. That's easily explainable as the entire section of road has been labelled as belonging to Himatangi.

My question on this sort of thing is what's the convention about using the city label on the streets? I wondered if people didn't realise that Waze would use that to determine the extent of the town/city, which makes using it on the surrounding roads a bit interesting.
Hi, not sure about Carnarvon, I'll have to take a look at it. In general though I use the correct name as much as possible and where there is a long rural road will often split the name to using the appropriate 'city' names as the road moves through various towns and areas

Every suburb, town, city etc has a fixed geographical boundary so why not use that? There's nut much point just leaving the city field blank between centers.
