What should I do with this intersection?

Hi everyone,

I am working on a stretch of SH 1 and in the space of a few kilometers there are 2 intersections which on the surface are remarkably similar but have had very different intersections put in.

Which is the preferred method? Exceedingly simple or slightly more complex with feeder arms.

Simple

More complex
https://world.waze.com/editor/?lon=175. ... =151616294

These 2 intersections follow each other on SH 1.

Sorry just realised the permalink is the same

 Sounds like fun.

Your right though driving them would be the best way to assess them. Right guess were off to Mercer and Meremere later, pm me if you're really keen pcp.

Barrier? I haven't read any guidelines for barriers. Could you put a link in to the relevant wiki pages, sorry there is so much to read I've clearly missed it.

Thanks nzhook but this hyperlink better explains how to create intersections

http://wworld.waze.com/wiki/index.php/A ... Connectors
There are only a few situations in which connectors are called for in an intersection:
when the turn lane physically separates from the main road well in advance of the intersection;
when the turn lane is far enough from the point of intersection on the map (due to the size of the intersection or the angle at which the roads meet) that the driver might overshoot while waiting for a delayed "turn" audible, or that the Waze client might become confused and disrupt navigation
when the area is "busy" enough that the driver may not get any advance warning that a turn is coming up--in which case a connector lets you notify the driver a little earlier
As an Area Manager, when you get a user complaint that the audible was too late, or that the map should have shown a connector
When in doubt, leave it out. Each connector complicates the map and adds to your workload when the time comes to check connectivity, direction, name, etc.
This section sums it up rather well.

It seems that there is a clear argument that on a 100km/h rd like SH1 it might be best to put the connectors in to allow plenty of warning and time for drivers to move lanes and exit the highway.

All sorted went with the kiss theory. Actually the at-grade connectors gave incorrect driving instructions. Telling you to keep left instead of turn left etc so simplified and sorted at least those 2 anyway.

yep

I wish others would lean this as well.

Avoid double tracking and ramps at intersections...............

I think the complicated one is too complicated, the simple one may need a small change but it would depend on the size of the barrier would be the key. Can you pull into the second lane at the last minute or do you need to be in the lane beforehand.

eg. Waze instructions would be:
In 800 meters get ready to turn right (although I think at 100k its not 800 meters)
In 400 meters turn right
Turn right

Alternatively the instructions would be something like:
In 800 meters get ready to keep right
...

You only really need to cater for the approach on SH1 as well, coming off Springhill Road shouldn't need any more than Turn left or Turn right as you can only follow the road.

Theres a few places that have/may mention barrier/median, and it depends on the topic you are reading.

Probably the best place is here (when its talking about splitting roads):
http://wworld.waze.com/wiki/index.php/B ... g_practice

But the reason I mentioned it, is for the driving instructions, if they *need* to get into the segment before the actual turn then it maybe best to cover in the instructions. (It may also be nice to have a Keep right instruction just as the barrier starts followed by a turn right at the turn when the distance is high)

eg. thats why a lot of SH1 would be split, you cant easily change direction because there is a barrier in the way.

Yeah, sounds like what I was thinking.

If the barrier would prevent a driver from being able to make the decision, then it may need the segment, but if theres no barrier then the normal notification times should be fine.

From the satellite imagery it looks like its more of a small island than a barrier, so beyond maybe pulling the joiner closer to the entry I dont think it needs anything else.
