Regarding "Cities" - New Zealand

Postby ispyisail » Fri Jan 24, 2014 6:15 pm

Hi all

It appears that waze HQ are on a tidy up mission for NZ.

(Update)

The goal is

The city field = City or Town only
Between city's leave tick "none"

But for now many of our major cities have suburbs in the city field. For now we should leave them until the Waze database is updated.

This is for when the suburb field is implemented, right?
Not *right now*?

That's not my understanding

Hi all!

As part of the Province and Regions distribution project we just started,
We would like to request your assistance with understanding the way things work in each country.
.....

Thanks!
Shani

Hi Shani

I’m trying to understand how Waze wants City’s displayed myself.

In New Zealand we have a few different systems in different parts of the country. Most people have different views.
......

Hi ispyisail,

You should use the first system now (major city and street).
As for regions, we are now in the middle of o worldwide process to add all the provinces and regions and to set the correct hierarchy between the cities and regions.
I'll be happy to keep you posted when it is implemented.

Thanks,
Amit

Hi

Just to clarify, your suggesting that the city field = "city" or "Town" but not "suburb"?

ispyisail

Yep. At the moment in rurle areas you can leave the city field empty.
In the future we'll add the regions to the DAta base, and you could update the segments.

I was just thinking that if we implemented it in Auckland right now without the surburb field (ie. Change all streets in Auckland to have 'City: Auckland') we're going to lose a lot of suburb info, and would take longer/require more effort restoring that information once the suburb field is implemented in the WME.

yeah

I'm staying away from Auckland for now

When you get level 5/6 we have tools that can do mass changes. Adding suburbs back is easy with these tools.

In about 30 minutes I removed all suburbs from Christchurch

I really think we should leave the suburb data as is, until Waze have a replacement. Loosing all that info would be a pain, both for the client users searching for an address, and for editing the suburbs back in later on.

Great South Road as an example I can think of right now...

Strangely enough I put that question to the Waze staff yesterday (re Gt South Rd)...
I haven't got a reply on that one yet...

Update

The call has been made not to make any changes to the existing city structures until a waze infrastructure change.

ps_au wrote:Ok, just to clarify what ispyisail is saying:
Leave the suburbs in metropolitan areas as they are. So for example, Gt South Rd.. City="Ellerslie" or whatever suburb its travelling through at the time. Try to steer away from just calling the City name "Auckland" or "Wellington" etc, as this is just being lazy... Use the Surburb name in the City field (just as you have done in the past)

ONLY Rural Areas (and we have a lot of them in NZ) are you permitted to TICK the "City" name to Null if you cannot find a Suburb for it. "Street" Names are still a requirement.

Waze are in the worldwide process of updating City/State boundaries which is a big project. This in turn should address any remaining smudges.

I'm actually still a little confused myself.

When I have time I will seek more clarification.

Good grief.

Sometimes I think the Waze people are so nebulous with their "plans", that they don't really realise the impact it has on usage.

Thanks for the
