Ferry Road Type

Postby nzahn1 » Wed Apr 06, 2016 1:28 am

The Ferry Road Type was previously inactive; this is no longer the case. Global Champs have confirmed the Ferry road type is operational. In addition, the latest version of the Waze App displays a ferry symbol when routes contain a ferry crossing (see attachment). In order to keep the USA the best mapped country around, I propose the following wiki pages update:

A new Ferries/USA page. The new Ferries page is closely modelled after the global ferries page, with some modification for the USA, and for the new Ferry Road type.

An updated Road types/USA#Ferry section. The updated section would be moved to the drivable roads portion of the Road types page.

Both pages are in their first draft, and proof reading and content comments are welcome.

It is confusing about the way to label the entrance and exits. You mention main roads and landings and not exactly standing out which is which.

Recommend having Ferry Entrance then the information

and Ferry Exit then the information

Also Marking as Toll then the information

Also, why the 2 hour limitation? I'm aware of at least a couple of ferries that while over two hours, are still shorter both in time and distance, than taking the mainland route(s).

The Waze client has an avoid ferries setting (which will hopefully one day ***soon*** be working right) much like the avoid dirt roads setting. As map editors, like with dirt roads, we should probably not be making decisions about the relevance of car-carrying ferries. If a ferry exists and will take your car, we should map it using the ferry type.

I'm also for keeping ferry routes and their approaches locked to L5 until all the client functionality surrounding ferries - specifically the new avoid ferries feature - is completely sorted out. Afterwards, we can revisit the topic if so desired.

We've switched to the Ferry Road Type in Washington State a few months ago. It seems to be working well and the crossing times are far more accurate than when they were set to other road types, usually Major Hwy.
First I learned how to draw lines on a map. Now I must learn the art of Feng-ShWaze.

Ferries USA
Nice part. I think that. The use off Toll need some more explanation.
Dual direction. Is this toll on the ramp or is it on the Ferry?
And single direction toll. That can not put on the Ferry. That is clear.
But is it correct shown in the app. (toll, ferry icon)

I've updated both wiki pages with new information/guidance now available. Please review and comment.

Also, construction templates added.

Just throwing my agreement with the process in here. Glad to see Ferries operational finally and looking forward to getting them implemented.

The dozen or so ferries in Kentucky are small craft that carry 3 or 4 cars across a river, some of these boats can carry a single truck up to 50,000 lbs GVW. They pull up to ramps, not docks. These ferries connect highways that are categorized as primary streets. mH and MH have bridges. Example at

https://www.waze.com/editor/?env=usa&lo ... ueFilter=0

For the origin of this solution in KY you would need to reach to khaytsus or xanderb.

Watercraft is a single word. The plural of watercraft is watercraft. Large watercraft are called ships.

May I suggest a minor change?

Ferries are watercraft (ships and boats) that carry vehicles (and people) across water from one shore location to another. Ferries normally have scheduled sailings and are often run as a part of the highway system.
