Difficult Left Turns

Post by
Hey Guys!

We're getting closer to opening this feature to all drivers in USA, please read the updates and if you have any questions let me know.

Avoid difficult intersections:

In metros around the world drivers find themselves at turns that may be legal, but are nevertheless nerve wracking due to limited visibility, constant flow of oncoming traffic, or lack of traffic light. The risk of these turns only worsen at high-volume traffic times, like rush hour.

Today, we shall open the feature to 10% of the LA users in production. Just to verify that it is working well.

On Wednesday, the feature will be open in North America (by default to all drivers).

Wazers in LA will get a push notification telling them about the feature.
They will also get an inbox message.

Next step will be enabling the editing of these turns in WME so you can add them anywhere.
These turns are not completely disabled in routing, but get a penalty to make them un-preferred.

Thanks!

This will definitely need guidance on application and may also be something that would benefit from being restricted to higher level editors to prevent abuse and help reduce some of the subjectivity.

While I agree that having local boots on the ground knowledge is critical, I don't know if that is feasible in much of the country. An Area Manager would be the next best thing but again they may not be local either.

Either way we need guidance to better understand the feature and how best to implement from an editors perspective.

I received the push notification last night that it was available on the app. I'm thinking about setting one to see what we end up seeing in WME option wise. Thoughts about doing so?

Is it possible to set them at this point?
That was one reason I wanted to set one was to see if anything new was available in the UR. I've seen a couple set by users and there is nothing new in the UR, so as far as I can tell there is nothing we can do as of now.

They way I understand it; in the app(map) you will see nothing. Turning on the feature will add a penalty to the designated turn when the routes are calculated by the server. Therefore, you will likely not be routed through that turn; that is the only thing users will see. Think of it like the 'avoid tolls' option; Waze will provide no toll routes, unless a toll route is significantly faster/shorter. Now, what is significant faster; only Waze knows...

Difficult turns could be difficult for a variety of reasons, such as:
  • Heavy traffic on the s-in (turn-from) street.
  • Heavy traffic on the s-out (turn-to) street.
  • Heavy traffic on another street at that intersection (e.g., if it's a 5-way intersection).
  • Traffic that moves at normal highway speed on the cross-street, but there's a lot of it with few gaps.
  • Bad timing of nearby traffic lights ensuring that there's always traffic coming from one direction or the other.
  • Limited sight distance, such as due to a hill on the cross-street.
  • Obstructions at the corner blocking the driver's view to turn.
Of these, only the first two or three could be covered by jam detection.

To be fair, the above doesn't say which Wednesday ;) , however I can't see the feature in the iOS production app. Is there an update on when it is expected to go live?

Is this something that is going to be available to all editors to change? Because, if so, this is a win for all of those neighborhood activists who cry to the media about Waze sending traffic through their special neighborhood streets.

They just sign up as a new editor, flag all of the intersections in their area as "Dangerous" and...problem solved.
