East Tennessee Help Needed with intersection

Post by mysticcobra
I reported this issue and experienced it at least twice on consecutive days. I can't figure out why waze wants me to go south and make a U-turn instead of just turning left. It is legal and I don't see any restrictions in the map that appear to prohibit the maneuver.

Not sure if this will highlight the route or not but...

How long was your route?
It is bad form to have a street segment connecting major highway segments like this one does. Waze will under the right circumstances, particularly in the middle of long routes, avoid the street segment.

I think I just realized why it's doing it. Is it telling me to go around in order to avoid sitting at the red light (left turn) because it is faster?
Yes, waze will route straight/U/right or right/U rather than left if the data show on average its faster.
MysticCobra wrote:Do we really want everyone doing this?
If its legal and truly faster, then I would say waze should route everyone who has their navigation type set to fastest like this.
MysticCobra wrote:Do we want to "fix" this?
Depends a bit what you mean by fix.
1) If the U-turn is not legal or has no legitimate use, then you could disable the U turn. (In your examples the U-turn does seem to provide legitimate access to the parking lots on the east side of the road.)
2) Waze is likely working on scant data for the U-turn and may well be assuming that the U turn is faster than it is. When waze has routed me like this. Most often when I take the route with the U a few times, waze stops suggesting the route with the U. So you may be able to fix the problem simply by following the waze suggested route.
3)I also think waze could likely fine tune its routing algorithm to address what "fastest" really means in these circumstances, but that is not something the we as users or editors can fix.

These are relatively short. 20-30 minutes. Looks like the crossover segment in the other example I posted is marked as major highway, but the same problem exits.

Hope you don't mind me piling on the problems...

This is one of the most effed up intersections I've seen in a while most because there are no signs telling you how to get onto I-81 N when going north on Old Jonesboro.

Anyway, I added a crossover road which appears to be the suggested route to get onto I-81 N but I can't allow the turn (straight) from the cross over road onto the ramp because that short ramp segment is locked.

Locked segment:

Good answer. Just what I was looking for. I agree that over time it will correct itself as more users go this way.

Another problem (see what happens when I travel?):

Looks like an intersection is missing and thus no turn allowed....

Thanks for the help. While I see your point on the last issue, if the U-turn is legal, then why not allow it? It looks like with that striped lane there is probably room.
