First letter capitalization is a "feature" in the editor - we didn't used to have it and it was added. I asked for an escape character to intentionally defeat the forced capital, but never heard back.

Not anymore, US DOT now requires all street signs to be proper case...

See: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-10-21-road-signs-all-caps-lowercase_N.htm & http://www.missionmission.org/2012/06/14/what-the-hell-is-happening-to-sfs-iconic-street-signs/. There was supposed to be a deadline for cities & towns to replace ALL signs, but due to the economy the government decided that they will give them much more time & they can roll out the new signs during normal sign replacement.

Also, before someone calls BS on this, see Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/politics/traffic/mixedcase.asp

That was the clarification/reprieve I mentioned...

Not necessarily - when the street is named after a person and that's person name starts with a lowercase letter - like "deKoven", the street name matches the person's name.

I've demonstrated it several times (in several threads). There are roads around the country that DO start with lowercase letters. I think auto-capitalization is a good idea (and "to" can be the only coded exception), we need an escape character so we can force a lowercase when needed.

I dread seeing something like 'el' Camino as people look for a way to get around the rule of title case.
That's not what I mean by an escape character. In computer coding, escape characters are visible in the code, but not visible in the output/client. So while the editor may show "\el Camino" in the area on the left where you put edit names, the map (editor, client, live map) would just show "el Camino"

In the USA, the language is English. Other languages on signs are very rare. Official sources capitalize the street names.

I wouldn't say that street names from other languages are very rare in the USA.

I'm not really sure what "in English" means when we are talking about a name. I certainly follow the street signs. The question becomes what to do when the street signs are in all capital letters. I thought the question was how to handle signs that say "EL CAMINO Ave," "LA RIVIERA St" or "D'ANGELO Rd." I just don't see how saying those signs are "in English" helps solve the problem.

So have you answered your question then? Because I don't know if that means we should capitalize the first letter or not.
