Errors routing to / through Yosemite Valley via Hwy 120

There is some routing weirdness in the Yosemite Valley.

Routing from the Los Angeles Area to most destinations in the Valley itself is fine. Routing from anyplace on the East side of Tioga Pass (Lee Vining, June Lake, Bishop, etc...) fails.

Routing from the East side of Tioga to places on the other side of the Yosemite Park that DON'T go through the Valley (Wawona Hotel) is fine.

The only major difference between routing to the Valley and going past the Valley to Wawona is a left turn on Big Oak Road which leads down to the Valley. Coming from the East side of Tioga requires the left turn on Big Oak, while coming from Los Angeles takes a different road into the Valley.

So there's something up in the area of Big Oak road, but I can't find it. Anybody else able to lend a second pair of eyes? Thanks!

Or maybe it was someone before you.

We should be able to use Time Restricted segments for the portions of the road that are closed during the winter, rather than disconnecting the road itself. I know there have been some reported problems around time restrictions, so we might need to do some testing up here to be sure it is working as designed.
Some of the roads actually DID have time restrictions on them...such as Glacier Point Road, and Waze was still routing onto it. Disconnecting is just the most reliable way. As far as the tolls, I did remove all I could find except for the small entrance segments into the park which should stay. If you found any I missed, thanks for getting rid of them. :)

kentsmith9 wrote:Understood. Looks like turn restrictions were either not set up correctly or are completely failing. Maybe the problem is a turn restriction is just a super high penalty. When the alternate route is 8 hours around the mountain Waze gives up and sends users that way anyway.
That's exactly the problem, it's just a penalty. For instance, when the Level 1 dude broke Wawona Road, Waze tried to route over Glacier Point. Even though Glacier Point doesn't go through to the valley (unless you drive off the cliff at the end), and even though it had a turn restriction.

Anywho, as of now, all four entrances have been split at the ranger stations and only the fork going into the park is Toll. If you see any others, feel free to kill them. :)

Nice thing about Yosemite is that there are only four entrances, and two of those are open year-round and rarely closed. So it's fairly easy to keep track of the roads that DO close such as Glacier Point or Tioga.

There was for quite some time a bug that time restrictions over something like 50 days didn't work.

I also find it a bug that you can't put seasonal restrictions (i.e. restriction that repeat yearly) in place. It seems to me if you have to edit the road for each season, then disconnecting the road is the better course of action at this point.

I know of a lot of other places where an entrance fee is required that has nothing to do with through traffic. It never occurred to me to make a park road into a toll road. It sounds like every entrance should be private or something like that.

If you are not using the park as a visitor, you cannot just pay a "toll" to transit the park. People should not be routed through any portion of a park that requires an entrance fee even if they have not set "Avoid tolls". That really is not correct; toll avoidance logic does not apply.

Is marking a park entrance as a toll road a standard?

On the note of winter closures - All along the Sierras most (if not all) have been disconnected.

The biggest issue to putting any dates for the closure/open is the dates are not depended on a set date but the snow. So it could close/open sooner or later.

Hopefully the AM/CM/RC are watching the reports and can get the expected open dates, so that is where the date restriction can work, because we can change the open date for each season and they usually know about 3 to 7 days before they get the passes to open.

The practice that has been adopted is if you have to pay to go through the park then mark it as a toll. The reasoning behind that is if you are planning to go to the park you would know that you would have to pay to go in and there is no real advantage marking it as a toll, but for people that want to go from point a to point b and it happens to go through the park but you have to pay, then that is a toll for that person. We had been getting several URs regarding the issues about being routed through the park from one side to the other and was not told there would a toll.

So currently Yosemite has the entrances marked as a toll, a place like Bryce does not.

Setting the entrance to the park as private would cause other issues. I would never get a route through the park. But with it set as a toll and I am willing to pay the toll, then that would be one of the option I would get from one side to the other.
