[SOLVED] Small detour preferred - help needed - JHB

Post by boonie-oet-gelaen
Hi,
This user sent a UR and he is right. At the time he drove the route, Waze has sent him over a small detour because it is faster, on averige at that time. "Route speeds" confirms this. But in my opinion this detour should be avoided.

I've heard there are detour prevention mechanisms but I don't know how to activate or triggger them.

I think I need help to do some trick here to prevent the detour. Any options?

Dave

I've used the "route speeds" script. This does confirm that routing at the time of the UR would have been via a small detour north.

Is there anything we could change or improve to prevent this? Somehow trigger detour prevention mechanisms?

I've read that there are detour prevention mechanisms that would make that you will be forced over a slower segment if that would delay less than (i think) 5 minutes. Not sure about detaills.

I think it's all to do with the road types (and speeds on them), although waze will quickly reroute once the driver ignores waze's given route and looks out of the big glass panel in front of them.

I can't see a problem with the route given, as both are valid and waze is programmed to give the fastest route (as the majority of users never switch this option to shortest route).

Ian

The detour should be avoided yes. I can't help but feel like Waze was just checking the other one though.
Volunteer responding. I can't find anything in the map to explain the unexpected route Waze gave you. Traffic, a daily pattern of traffic, a temporary road closure, a bicyclist or very slow vehicle inappropriately using Waze, or just a slow stoplight that routinely backs up cars can all cause Waze to suggest surprising alternatives. Sometimes Waze may recommend an unexpected route even after traffic has cleared up or a temporary closure has ended, because it doesn't know yet. Also, if Waze hasn't yet collected enough data in the area, it may overestimate the speeds of side roads, turns, and U-turns. It definitely does help for drivers to try Waze's suggestions, as it gives Waze more speed data on those alternate routes. At any rate we'll close this report as the map itself appears to be OK. Cheers!
