Proposal: Point Places vs. Area Places  Topic is solved

Postby benandjerry » Wed Oct 14, 2015 7:54 pm

Another topic that came up in the HO: the determination of using point vs. area places. It was suggested that any point that is significant to an area as a visual marker should be defined as an area place. If this is agreed upon, maybe suitable to update the wiki, as currently it says to basically follow the standard guidance.

I could swear at one point the Thai Wiki stated to use area places for significant visual landmarks. But either I'm mistaken or it was removed at some point. The example temple is an area place, even though the "official" guidelines say point.

As has probably been noticed by anyone who has done any editing outside a major city (and even in many cities), road signs are lacking in Thailand. And in fact, many roads have no name or number at all, since addresses don't require a street in Thailand.

This makes it important to have visual landmarks that drivers can reference to determine which un-named or un-signed road to turn on. My preference is that any major building near an intersection, that has large visible signage may be a candidate for an area place. That way the name of the building can be seen in the Waze app, to give a better visual representation where the turn is in relation to local landmarks.

It is perfectly normal in Thailand to be given directions like "Go down this road for a few kilometers until you see the Big C, you'll turn left the street before you get to it, and then your destination will be on the left a little ways after the temple." So in addition to making it easier to tell what road you should turn on, it makes it easier to match spoken directions to the Waze map when scrolling around.

Area Place size
Area places will show up in the Waze mobile apps if they are large enough. Recent testing shows that area places which are at least 50 meters in one dimension and at least 10 meters in the other will show up. Tests are still being run to find out the minimum size.

Not sure what the outcome of the tests was, but it's good to keep in mind when creating these area places so that they are actually visible on the live map.

Update on area place testing:

I have tried various size areas to appear in my app map.

While it will not show objects with a short side of 10 or 15 meters (even with a long side of 50m), I did get an area to show of 20x35m.

Continuing testing to see if 20x30m; 20x25m and 20x20m will show up in the app map.

In my tests, 10x10, 10 x 50 and 20x20 did not show up. But 30x30 does display.

Draft: "Make an area place out of any notable location that can be used for driving directions given by people. (Note: small places won't show on the map.)" with a link to the place size wiki.

I like the idea of mapping visual landmarks, for all the reasons described. I imagine that this would complicate standards a bit.

But in general, size and visibility are the primary deciding factor. Most things the Wiki already defines as Areas would probably be Areas in Thailand, too. But we'd also throw in others, such as the big restaurant on the corner, but not the little hole-in-the-wall restaurant a bit farther down?
