Naming convention, which are cities in Malaysia?

Post by a4xrbj1
In order to avoid ending up with too much wrong data and not a uniform entry from us Wazers, can we all agree that as stated in the Waze guidelines and Wiki we should only edit Cities in the City field when naming a road?

Therefore, areas/districts like Bangsar or Kota Damansara, despite their size, are still NOT cities in Malaysia. For a full list to check refer to this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_and_towns_in_Malaysia_by_population

As our map is still far away from complete, I'd like us to concentrate now on rather using this in the future then to start a big renaming campaign, checking every possible city name. I think we can do this later, but please keep in mind that when you enter a new road that Waze is then automatically selecting the city name for you, based on the highest number of city names in this area. Thus this needs special attention as we otherwise enter even more wrong city names.

Once the major highways and primary roads are the we can might start to change city names, but I'll start another thread just on the order of editing work soon.

Hope that we Map Editors can all agree to this, the main problem should anyway be more in wider KL area and some of the other bigger cities.

Cheers,

Andreas

Hi Andrew,

I've noticed your effort lately, especially with a lot of pending delete requests coming from you and Wei!

I fully agree to your post, actually I use Google Maps in the same way, just I type in the street name when I'm unsure which city it is. I've seen two instances where someone used that suburb, city format in KL, but I edited it back to the agreed format.

Unfortunately a large part of KL is now been swamped with Petalink Jaya and even a strange entry in the English City Name field. Noticed this in Damansara and in Bangsar, wow this is really killing me to change it on every count. Google Maps is even showing exactly the border between WP and Selangor, so what's so difficult to know where PJ is?

Anyway, ranting mode off <bg> got to have you on board as well and I guess this week you'll have a good shot at number spot to get your bonus points!

Cheers,

Andreas

This is not a problem that's unique to Malaysia. I read somewhere that UK Waze users have been getting around this by using 'Suburb, City' format in the city field (e.g. 'Kensington, LDN'). Still not an ideal solution. The best solution would be for Waze to add another 'Suburb' field into Cartouche but who knows if they are going to do this or not.

I generally agree with the need to standardize our city names and I'm started to fix my previous edits to reflect this. I previously used names of the 'Taman' that the LDP is passing through (e.g. Taman Megah, Taman Mayang) to give better indication of which parts of the LDP are congested in the pop-up traffic notifications. Not a good idea in hindsight as you've highlighted, so I've been updating them now to use Petaling Jaya as the City name.

However, instead of relying on that Wikipedia article that you've linked, I've been using Google Maps to determine the City name using the following steps:
1. Right-click on a road and click on 'What's here?'.
2. The road name will appear to the left of the map, together with the postcode and city name.
3. I will use the city name to update the city field in Cartouche.
(if it's 'Jalan Puchong, 47100 Puchong', I'll use Puchong as the city name in Cartouche. 'Persiaran Surian, Mutiara Damansara, 47410 Petaling Jaya' will have Petaling Jaya as the city.)

This has so far worked out well for me in my edits along my commuting route (PJ and south of PJ). The one oddity that I've come across is the Subang Airport Road is in 'Shah Alam' territory, which I assumed to be under 'Subang', but maybe my own assumption has been wrong all this while.

but the wiki list is not complete, for example why wiki capture Sungai Ara, Pulau Pinang but not Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang

prefer the method you mentioned in latest post which type in google map :D

Hi Mansul,

i saw some example like PJS11, all the business address here is under Petaling Jaya, but if you drive around then see with Subang Jaya on the signboard.

Paya Jeras is under Shah Alam is follow signboard.

it is ok as long as we agree on one move, sign board or pos address. I'll chose Post Address as that is the address we give you someone when they want to find us.

many things happen in our BOLEH LAND.

cheers,
Ryan
