L2->L1 Unlock R709 Segment for several edits

Post by world_qf2vjzil
Hi L2+ folks

Could you please unlock:

https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon ... ,280754336

There are a number of problems:
1. The geometry of the slip road (https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon ... =280754334) into the Kilbarry Centre Retail Park is completely wrong (just verified with Dashcam footage)
2. There are missing retail/parking areas to the north which require creation and connection to the R709

If you unlock those segments - I'll make both changes and advise.

Thanks

Doug

'morning Doug,
world_qf2vjzil wrote:I've made the edits. I'm pretty convinced these roads:

https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon ... ,280652274

should actually be commoned together into a single road - simplifying the junction with the R709 into a simple cross, with appropriate turn restrictions.

However, I just inadvertently overwrote my dashcam footage of the inside of the car park (by 20 minutes :x ) , so I can't be sure you aren't coerced to turn sharp left on entry - so I've just realigned the geometry and left the entrance/exit lanes separate - for now anyway.
I agree with you - and the SV images (from last year, so they're not too old) agree with you too. I've just replaced the split in/out segments with a single two-way segment, and set turn restrictions to what looks reasonable (no right turn in either direction, and no straight through from the shopping centre to the retail park (or the opposite).
world_qf2vjzil wrote:Hopefully that's appropriate - and you can reapply the R709 edit level lock
Cool - thanks. I've reapplied the L2 locks.

One question though: I notice the road changes from R686 to R709 at the entrance to both these centres. Is this the right change point? It seems odd that the road changes here. In face, the R709 exists on the west of the roundabout to the left AND on the east of the roundabout to the right.

Google calls this road the R709 all the way, but we shouldn't follow what that says. Looking at the SI with the R-numbers...

Inner Ring Road, Waterford

Between its junction with R680 at Cork Road and its junction with R683 at Newtown Road via Inner Ring Road, Richardsons Folly, Inner Ring Road and Passage Road all in the city of Waterford.
I think the R709 should join the two roundabouts. I've made this change - what do you think?

Hi Doug,
world_qf2vjzil wrote:Tried opening that SI link on my mobile; big mistake

Anyhoo - I took a read of that SI - and had a look at Waze in that area, and I think the road numbers might be all over the place (there certainly appear to be at least a few discrepancies).

I'm down that way today - and I'll take a look at the signage.

I'm sure you are right that the road is R709 on either side of those centers.
The SI is a bit hard to read and a bit ambiguous in places - it wouldn't surprise me if we have some roads that don't match exactly what they should be because the SI is hard to interpret.

There are a couple of newer SIs that define newer R-roads that have been built since that 2012 SI.

Anyway, yes, there are certainly a good few places where the R-roads aren't right. I occasionally find roads that should be an R-road (and have segment type "minor highway") but aren't, and occasionally find other inconsistencies like the one we're talking about here.

Feel free to point out anything that looks wrong and we can discuss further - and see if several people reading the SI can come up with something that looks right :)

Hi Doug,

Wow, hefty post :) - all sounds good though; I took a look to see:
world_qf2vjzil wrote:Having driven around that area today and read the signs, and also having read the SI, I conclude the following (haven't requested the editing magic wand; there's much L2 locking - so easier for you to amend where you agree):

This is R686: https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon ... =299136806

These are just Ashe Road: https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon ... ,269221506
I scratched my head here and changed my mind a few times, but I agree with you, since the "real" R686 is two-way. If there was a one-way section of the R686 on the east-west part, then I'd argue that this one should be part of the R686 (so that users can travel in both directions on the R686)
world_qf2vjzil wrote:These should all be R675 Tramore Road: https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon ... ,280761671

Contentious:
The road starting here: https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon ... =280652013

and heading out to Tramore should also be R675 Tramore Road, but I can't determine how far out - potentially all the way to Tramore.

As a kid, I would have known it as the Tramore Road all the way out; of course, when in Tramore, you'd sometimes call it the Waterford Road
Agree here - I've made it R675 Tramore Rd as far as the point where the speed limit changes from 50 to 80km/h. That was drivers in Waterford will be directed onto "Waterford Rd" until they're out of the city.
world_qf2vjzil wrote:Waze seems to share that opinion of the Tramore end here: https://www.waze.com/editor?env=row&lon ... =360964510 - but I don't know how valid it is.
I've done the same thing at this end - called it "R675 Waterford Rd" until the speed limit goes above 50, with the same reasoning - that somebody leaving Tramore and heading to Waterford would expect to travel on the Waterford Road.[/quote]
Happy Monday!

Hey Doug,

First: hey, it looks like your username change has come through (on the forum, at least), although it now looks like you have two forum accounts - one for each game.

Interestingly though, since I changed my ID to TurbulentPriest and it synced through to the forum, my post count is updating in WME (now showing "1"). (It was always zero in WME with world_qf2vjzil, even though the forum itself shows 48 posts).

I wonder if there is any way to join them together - or should I just bid adieu to world_qf2vjzil.
Well, the good news is that your editing profile seems to have made the transition in one piece:

https://www.waze.com/en-GB/user/editor/TurbulentPriest

...and that's arguably more important than your forum profile, even though it'd be nice to keep your forum history around. I suppose the forum profiles *might* merge, given time. It might be worth asking Yanis if his forum profile renamed as it should or whether he got stuck with two forum profiles when he changed his username.
