WOW: Delivered - Cartouche Practice Route function

Post by rtwolfe
Earlier, I suggested Waze add a practice route function in Cartouche.
Suggestion: Update Map - Practice Route function
http://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3342

I was hoping this would be added but, Oscar, found that somehow the function exists.

Basically, in Cartouch, all you need to do, is to select a road segment (which sets the start) and then scoll to control click another non-adjacent road segment (which sets the end of the route). Once both road segments are clicked, a "show route" option appears on the edit menu. If you click the "show route" link, a purple route line appears.

Oscar wondered if this only worked in firefox. I tested it with IE and Safari as well and all three could produce a routing in Cartouch. I think this will be very useful in debugging complex freeway intersections to be sure, when you are finished editing, that the ramps work.

Thanks Waze Dev. I also checked Announcement and updates, the Map Editing Wiki - especially the Edit window functions and I cannot see any formal documentation of the added function. But please don't take it way. I will save me a lot of gas and time that I used to spend 'test driving' to see if my area freeways were properly configured. Thanks Waze

Below are the screen shots from the 3 browsers

I -do- have the feature, but when I just tried a route I regular drive using Waze, I"m getting the "timeout" circling wheel in Firefox, which just spins and spins and gives no route.

Hey krankyd:
Thanks for the clarification. I think we'll all make great use of the new feature. For example, I
drove to my brother's house today, about 35 mile trip and had a few mis-routings along the way.
Funny Exits and double backs on the freeway (when going just straight was best), and if we had this feature, I'd know I'd use it many times a week.

Suggestion? On another post, http://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... 392#p27392 we area managers talked about setting up a beta process for cartouche like the beta process for the client. I expect a lot of area managers and power users would love to help you build this functionality correctly. Is it possible to use this new cartouche functionality as a first attempt at beta testing cartouche.

Nothing too fancy. Just post on the Blog that you are allowing beta testers, post a separate URL to let us launch the beta cartouche and try out the new functionality. We could post our feedback in the comments the blog post. Also, if you want us to post certain elements in our feedback, just tell us what you need. Assume a permalink for any problem is a minimum, also maybe day/time tested, what we were doing just prior to the problem, etc.

Would love to help you. Is a real win/win situation.

That's weird for those who do not see it. Just checking tho'. I had to control click two road sections that were far apart. Like road by home and then a road by work. Then the new option appeared.

Also I played with it last night on a complex part of my map. It gave an odd route. I saw some problem areas and fixed them but it kept showing problems. Maybe I missed some fixes or maybe the new function is still tied to the live maps data.

Waze support? Clarify?

Hi,
I had already given up on this neverworking function but tried again due to the posting here. As expected nothing has changed. No matter which route I try I am getting the circle of death turning forever and nothing else. Oh, maybe one thing has changed or I didn't notice yet: The selected segments appear as "from" and "to" at the address search and there is even a "navigate" button. But clicking the button does nothing more, the circle of death keeps turning...
I am really unhappy about this because this function would be that useful finding problems in routes, e. g. the small segments almost unvisible and impossible to find if you don't know where to look for them exactly. And as the function uses (would use if working  ...) the newest tiles changes of editing could be tested at once. I really don't understand why waze doesn't make it working; it is difficult enough to edit and any help making it easier would be valuable.
It's similar as the for a long time requested "pause"-button to prevent erronous travel reports when stopping at a gas station etc. Shouldn't be such a big deal but never appeared despite repeated user requests for a really long time. Rather frustrating...

Hi Amit,
thank you for the info and good luck for the debugging. I hope the function will be working soon.

Strange enough it never worked for me. As you can see in my example I even tried the most simple possible route to no avail. Of course I tried other routings where there might have been no route but in the last time I tried lots of really simple routes working in the live map and the client with all connected segments but no route shown by "show route" of the edit panel.
If no route can be found there should be a message at least but I always get only the circle of no return which can't be stopped except refreshing the page.

Hi,
this option exists for some time already and had been mentioned but has never worked for me. I even tried two segments of a completely connected road with only one segment in between but "show route" showed... nothing, not even an error message. I just tried again, simple example http://world.waze.com/cartouche/?zoom=6 ... 2=76302707 Both selected segments are connected to the small part in the middle. "Show route" gives nothing but the circle of no return turning forever although the route is really fast and simple.
It would be a really useful option... if it worked.
