I thought this already arose and was addressed here.

DwarfLord wrote:Perhaps a general guideline could be a very simple one -- if a building has a unique and locally well-known name, and is big enough to show as an area place, and is not part of a "village center" sort of pedestrian or quasi-pedestrian collection of buildings, then it can get mapped to the building outline.

It hardly makes sense to display a shaded polygon on the app display without a meaningful name. So if a building has a name that's not locally well known (e.g. "Camino Asfalto Marketplace Building #13") then I would say it's unlikely to make a good area place as a building. This doesn't constrain there being a larger area place to the property line.

There is still the question of overlapping area places, for example a building (e.g. "DwarfLord Hall") inside a campus (e.g. "Golden Axe University"). If the display washes out and you just see the text "DwarfLord Hall" floating in a huge sea of gray, that seems like a poor use of a building-specific area place.

Your proposal seems to get into the territory of the landmark section, whereas the original proposal was more about how to map things that are drawn as area places due to category. A section already exists on overlapping area places.

Can there be a page with the proposed wording since there seems to be confusion as to what is actually being proposed? There is reference to just being on shopping centers but other references to more than shopping centers.

For example there is talk about the single buildings "Examples include landmark buildings like the Pentagon, as well as large shopping malls, hospitals or stadiums/arenas that are constructed as single buildings." Then in the same post it says there is separate specific guidance for "Guidelines for drawing a few specific categories are more detailed and should be reviewed to become more familiar with them:

Gas stations
Parking lots
Airports
Hospitals"

So hospitals seem to be in both distinct categories. Or is the second one just need (multi-building campuses) added to the end of the list?

Yeah let's get rid of hospitals, since those have their own page. That whole list can be turned into a link, since it is duplicated at the bottom.

Here's my draft proposal incorporating the language proposed a few days ago, along the lines of gOyDp's original post.

Here's the diff.

Your proposal above is fine since it clarifies the discussion.

Not sure if you want to add anything about the smaller strip malls and which category they fall into or for the shopping centers that have the large one building in the center but several outliers (restaurants or other mid-sized box stores) which all share the parking lot areas.

Checked the diff, glad to see the word "landmark" is coded as a link.

I'd like to offer the following clarifications in red:

Some area places have a single recognizable structure useful as a visual reference for Wazers as they approach this destination from various directions. These can be drawn to approximate the structure's footprint or outline, provided the structure:
  • has a meaningful structure-specific name that is at least locally well known;
  • is not already located within a larger area place as per Area Places overlap guidance; and
  • as long as this is large enough to show in the mobile application.

Where the words "Area Places overlap guidance" would of course be a link to the associated guidance.

[EDIT: Clarified final bullet point was already part of Kartographer's current proposal.]

I like Kartographer's draft, with DwarfLord's edits. In fact it looks like the point about large enough to show in the mobile app is already there.

How big (in terms of sq ft/sq m) is large enough to show in the app?

If you check the wikitext, there's a comment that staff doesn't want us to publish the size threshold. Because of that, I don't think we should make it a condition. If you use PIE, it will tell you, but any recognizable building with multiple approaches will almost certainly meet the minimum size to be displayed.

Yes, that last point is indeed already there! Unfortunately the bbcode color tag seems not to "play nice" with the bbcode list tag. I added a workaround in my post to clarify.
