RTO drive against non KA vehicles in Bangalore

Postby Samking20 » Thu Sep 04, 2014 8:26 am

Hi Bangalore Wazers!

I joined Waze 3 years ago, but admittedly have not used it much. Restarted recently after getting a new phone since it works better for me now. Great to see a lot of development and activity here!

One issue that I wanted to bring to the attention of the community is regarding the treatment of non-KA registered vehicles in Bangalore at the hands of RTO. Temporary residents are being forced (and harassed) to pay lifetime tax which is the highest in the country.
There is an active movement around this to stop the harassment and also demand only annual tax - there are writ petitions and stay orders in the process. However, a short term solution is needed.

See this:

Today is being called Black Thursday as RTO has large groups of officers since early morning to catch as many cars and demand lifetime tax as they can. People have expressed that they feel like thieves in their own country because everytime they drive they are scared of cops. Some are not driving at all.

As Waze's mission is to help the community, I wanted to get some discussion going on how we can support temporary visitors as well as regular residents who are willing to pay what is due, but within reason. Until the law changes, we need to help each other be safe from such harassment while not restricting our mobility.

On Facebook, many folks have been updating posts to notify others of the location of checks, but since Waze has specific features to flag off such activity, I thought it would be a good idea to have a Group around this.

Admins and Managers, is there any other way we can improve this situation for the community?
