European maps coming soon?

Post by
I just saw the press release on Google about Waze's new partnerships which, if I am reading this correctly, will give us some new base maps in Europe!!!

What does this mean for us active road mappers? Should we take a break from road labelling cause a lot of the work is about to be done for us?

(And if I am supposed to take a break, after having made 15,000 road edits to the UK's map, what else am I supposed to do with my life? )

One problem, the Dutch roads are labeled as German. Will this be fixable for users?

As the country field is non-editable (or so it seems), how do we edit them?

Wow, that press release sounds really interesting. Also, because Intermap's technology seems to be the perfect complementary to Waze, thereby making them a perfect couple.

Let's lean back and wait for news from Waze. I guess it will take some time to import that data into Waze. I hope they tell us soon how this will be done. I.e. how conflicts with existing data will be treated. Anyway, that's great news!

Indeed we have started uploading the Germany and France grid (BASE) maps.
This should not affect map editing in other countries, and sorry about the pop-up message if it's coming up in the wrong place... we will remove it once the process is done.
Right now you can see that there are two sets of roads - the new BASE maps and the USER maps. We will soon start merging the two.

If you do notice problems that this process is causing in other countries, we'd appreciate if you let us know directly by sending an email to alpha@waze.com

I think it's fine to start the test of new maps in smaller (as in "with few users") countries. But once they see everything is working fine, they should really move to high-density areas.

I've personally suspended any further editing of the actual map since I've known about this. I know nothing will be lost during the transition, but since we're almost there… I want to wait for the "real deal" and start working directly on that.

I'm a bit curious about what this will do actually, I havn't even seen aerials yet in my area so all the roads are made from gps points and nothing else, like for many others!

does this mean that we won't have to drive around creating the roads with the "bulldozer" active anymore or what... that's been part of the fun for me! oh and don't take me wrong... I'm really really looking forward to this! Hi quality 3d maps... can't be anything else then fun :D

It has an immediate impact on those of us who are active mappers - I might not want to spend as much time over the next few weeks adding roads if some batch job is about to do it for me, so support - could you let us know what we can expect?
