Waze forum

Hey everyone, I'm pretty much new to waze, but I'm really on board with it. I've done extensive editing on Google Maps in my area, but I've decided to put my efforts to improving the maps here, the ones that ACTUALLY give us traffic data and navigation.

So Here's my question. There's a big contrast between the mobile maps and the maps shown on the website here (before we enter editing mode). Why is there such a huge contrast? Not that I mind, I'm just wondering.

Also, if anyone's interested in a mapathon, I'm all for it

I've just started some more editing, and I see what you mean. The navigation is great, and I guess as more people join, waze would be better able to give traffic data, alternate routes etc.

I'm trying to be very active in my area, marking down names of businesses and then putting them up here.

I just hope others are doing the same

The "livemap" - the map you see on the website has long been problematic. I think that it's not a high priority for Waze HQ at the moment as lots of other stuff has been happening over the last few months.

The main problem with the livemap is that it is visually out-of-date - possibly by a very large amount - and the "last updated" date has gone through periods of not changing or disappearing. However apart from the visuals, it is, in fact as up-to-date as the client (which is updated more or less every day at the moment).

For example, if you created a new road in the editor a few days ago, it would not be visible, but you can click on the right part of the live map (if you can find it ) and the details will appear. You can also use livemap routing based on the updated details.

You want to avoid putting most individual businesses on the map. Waze searches for POIs by passing the search off to Bing, which returns the GPS location. Waze then routes to the nearest segment to the GPS location (which can provide some occasional strange routing ). Although Waze will also search it's own landmarks, it's not the first search choice.

Putting lots of small businesses clutters up the map and will have a tendency to gradually become out-of-date. Why not let the webs do our updating for us? Also, in some areas, senior editors may well come along and clear out small business landmarks. They often don't show up in the client if they're not large.

You didn't say where you're editing, but there are somewhat different standards in different countries. There's a link to the UK Wiki in my signature and you can go from there to the main Wiki. It's also worth having a look in your country forum - there may well be links to specific landmark guidelines there.

Very interested in this, used waze for the first time this morning, already found a piece of road thats missing on my way to work. for the most part it seems pretty accurate thus far though. I think we should push to develop a local community for this.
