Lift of Bertha's cutter end in Seattle

Postby AlanOfTheBerg » Thu Apr 02, 2015 11:49 pm

Seattle Tunnel Partners lifted the 2,000-ton front end of the SR 99 tunneling machine to the surface for repairs on March 30, 2015. This time-lapse video shows the lift from three perspectives.

In case you've been under a rock in the northwest, this tunnel machine is currently the largest to-date in the world with a cutter head nearly 60ft in diameter. Due to mechanical issues, it had to stop tunneling to be repaired. A huge pit was built for it to tunnel into so that it could be taken apart and lifted up for repairs. Read more about Bertha on her page.

How she looked in the pit last week:

She used to be so much more shiny:

First I learned how to draw lines on a map. Now I must learn the art of Feng-ShWaze.
