Map / Address Search: City, Township, County

Post by mattbooty
I was directed from reddit to post this here and hopefully you guys can help!

I'm in PA so maybe its specific to my area, but why does Waze seem to default to County and Township instead of city? If I zoom out on the map I see county and township names instead of city names, which at least in this area no one knows those names. If I see "Harrisburg" on a map, I know where that is. But if I'm looking at the map of central PA on Waze, that area says "Middle Paxton". I could only figure out it was Harrisburg by looking at the major interstates going around it. Same with most areas of the state, if I see a city name I know what part of the state I'm looking at, but I know very few counties.

In addition, it seems to search by those instead of city. Like if I enter my in-laws address as 1234 Happy Circle, State College (not the actual street address), or choose them from my saved contacts, it'll show me a list of choices that match 1234 Happy Circle, none of which are listed as state college, pa. I finally found that the one I wanted was listed as "Harris, PA"... which is the township they are in. But I'd never heard ANYONE refer to their address as Harris before Waze did it, and if they ever gave someone their address to use for directions they would 100% of the time say the city name of State College. Same with another relative in State College, their address in the search shows as "Ferguson, Centre, PA"... but again, no one would ever refer to her address as that, its in State College.

Is this something fixable, or is it just how Waze does it for some reason? It can make it difficult to navigate at times.

Thank you!!

Hi!

I'm Wombosi_G on Reddit who responded to your post.

Since PA is entirely incorporated, it uses the township/boro/CDP/city as the city and then, depending on the situation, appends the county. If you type in 1234 Happy Circle, State College PA it will (fingers crossed) send you to the same spot as 1234 Happy Circle, Harris PA.

The USA Waze wiki page on City Names explains this topic in great detail. Check it out here: https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Ro ... City_names

Thanks for your interest in this aspect of Waze. Hope to see you on Discord!

Yes, that makes sense. Waze doesn't come out and say "Hey, we use cities this way." It's complicated and people usually want to get an app that safely and swiftly gets them from point A to point B and aren't concerned about the technical. But the city format is tricky to wrap your head around.

If you click on the address, it will zoom in and show it next to the map, which can help you ascertain if it is the result you wanted. Adding a place/address as a bookmark can help, too.

Thank you for your response! And you are correct, it DOES route to the correct house. Where it is challenging is when i type it in the search box, it'll give me a list of several search results for 1234 Happy Circle, none of which actually match the city I'm looking for. Before I figured out that "Harris" was the result I wanted i had to look at each search result to try and figure out which one was actually state college before I could select the correct one, does that make sense?

And I'm using that address as an example, but I've seen this happen on a lot of address searches in PA, not just this one. It makes it hard to find the correct search result.

mattbooty - yes. This has been a problem in PA for a long time.
Initially, we did not have any good resources for where to set the boundaries of mailing-address cities.
And, once we got better resources for that information, "shoving" that into the map along with the correct names for places (city, borough, township, census-designated place) can get a little tricky.

It is a problem we have not entirely solved yet.
