Proper Syntax of Exits for Interstate/US/State/Toll Hwys

Post by MGODLEW
Just figured I'd share this information since there still is a high number of exits either not labeled or improperly labeled.

Here is a complete list of all exits in Pennsylvania, I've been using for reference during my edits and I've found it matches the signage displayed at each exit verbatim. Pa Hwys Exit Guide

As per the wiki, it states the proper sequence is: (Exit number: route number / road name or city name)
I.E.: "Exit 175: SR-315 N / to I-476 / Pennsylvania Tpke / Pittston / Dupont, Jenkins" Example: Permalink

For on-ramps, the proper syntax is (to Hwy # & Direction) I.E.: "to I-81 N" Example: Permalink

Also, Don't forget to lock the ramps after you update them.

UPDATE:
A official Pennsylvania Wiki has been created. Please use that for Proper Syntax & Road Naming.

Now that we have Street View access, wouldn't it be better to read the exit information right off the last sign before the exit, as described in the wiki, here:

http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/How_ ... n-ramps.29.

The specific bullet I'm looking at says, "Include everything that is present on the last sign prior to the exit. Do not combine all possible pre-ramp signage into the single ramp segment name."

In your permalink, "N Cross Valley Expy" is denoted, but it isn't on the highway sign. It could be that the Street View is outdated, but I more trust a professional mapping company (Google, in this case) than a privately owned web site, e.g. the, "A picture's worth a thousand words," adage. The only thing I'd trust more than Google would be a PA DoT listing. Occasionally, Wikipedia comes through, but in this specific case, it doesn't match the sign, either. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate ... nnsylvania

Thoughts?

Interesting example I wanted some feedback on. There's an exit on State Rte 283 that only has the word "Salunga" on the sign. No road name on the exit sign (Spooky Nook Rd). I currently changed it from no street to "to Salunga". Thoughts?

I do agree, Google Street view is a GREAT tool but I often find it annoying and bothersome to use, especially when taking on a big project like checking/updating an entire interstate.

I think this exit is an exception to that because of the way the signage is awkwardly posted. While the sign itself does not directly say "N Cross Valley Expy" this is the name of the road. So according to the Syntax I was told I should use, this is why it reads (Exit number: route number / road name /or city name) (Exit 170B: SR-309 N / N Cross Valley Expy / Wilkes-Barre). Perhaps that wasn't the best example to provide unless my formatting is off. The official exit sign there is labeled (Exit 170B: SR-309 N / Wilkes-Barre) but I added the name of the road as well, is that not correct? Otherwise, I will be sure to update so it is compliant unless it is fine as is.

I do agree with you though, a picture certainly is worth a thousand words, however this road is rarely referred to as SR-309 N, its more common name is N Cross Valley Expy, I figured having it there could potentially help with navigating if they do not know that RT-309 is N Cross Valley Expy.

If this is wrong, I'd be glad to remove the road name. Or, I can provide a different example if that might be confusing to some. Otherwise, I would probably like to note that the link I provided is only for reference.. For ACTUAL visual proof of the exit name I would use Google Street View as you have suggested.

In the meantime, I have updated my first post to provide a better example.

I would change the name to "Exit to: Salunga" Because it is marked as an exit.

Found this Here which seems like good guidelines to follow.

The standard for the naming of US Routes was changed to:
US-xx (from US Hwy xx)
in January 2012 in order to save precious map real estate and to shorten TTS delivery time.

US Highways should:
be named according to the US-xx convention,
include directional indicators (i.e., "US-40 E") for all split portions of the route,
include local names where appropriate (i.e., when signed primarily using the local name; when
home/business addresses are given using a local name)
be navigationally sound, including all intersections and turnarounds, and
have, when access is partially- or fully-limited, properly-named ramps according to signage.

For example

INTERSTATE:
I-95 N
I-495 S

US HIGHWAYS:
Try to keep local names as primary (e.g. Pulaski Hwy) and put below as alternate name.
US-40 W (Split "1-way" segments)
US-13 (Unsplit "2-way" segments)

STATE ROUTES:
Try to keep local names as primary (e.g. S College Ave) and put below as alternate name. (more info)
SR-1 S (Split "1-way" segments)
SR-896 (Unsplit "2-way" segments)

ONRAMP:
to I-95 N
to I-495 S

OFFRAMP:
numbered exit: Exit 114: South Smyrna
numbered exit with multiple names: Exit 165B: I-95 N / Wilmington / Philadelphia
numbered exit with multiple exits: Exit 4A-B: SR-1 / SR-7 / SR-58 / Mall Rd / Dover / Churchmans Crossing
non-numbered exit: Exit to SR-1 S / Dover

Doesn't exist, as far as I know.
Some links to PA resources can be found here:
http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/se ... 064&mode=2

This site shows all "PA state roads administrative" (roads administered by PennDot):
http://maps.psiee.psu.edu/preview/map.ashx?layer=55

If you're looking specifically for county GIS data, search Google for "XXXX County, PA GIS," and you should find what you need.
maps.psiee.psu.edu definitely seems to be is a nice find.

In speaking with jondrush over a year ago about this, in PA he stated to label everything as a route and not a highway since we Pennsylvanians tend to say route
