Sorry that I missed this thread brewing last Friday. I spent a rare weekend away from the WME. I support the notion of using RT-# until such time as MD-# is pronounced Maryland.

I tried out Rt on a few ramps and it just didnt look right. So, I adopted MD-# as well.

Yes, I object. It's going to be unclear to anyone who isn't from Maryland. State routes should either have the word State in them or the state's abbreviation.CBenson wrote: Does anyone have any objections to this scheme.

Because "Route ##" traditionally indicates a US Highway, although that terminology has faded over the years. In some areas, it's faded to the point that "Route" is completely unused and foreign.CBenson wrote:Why would RT-3 not be clear? I don't see what "state" adds that makes it more clear.
If I drove into Maryland and heart "Route 3" or saw "RT-3" on the map, I would have no clue what to look for or expect. The first thing I'd look for though, is a US Highway shield on a sign.
Using Route or Highway alone creates ambiguity.
State Name-## (using the state abbreviation) is the least ambiguous and least clunky way of doing state highways. It doesn't work right for now because Waze pronounces it "letter letter" with the exception of New York. This would be fine for the locals in Louisiana because "LA-18" is actually pronounced "ellay 18"....once again, I don't think Waze should pronounce it that way because of people from out of state who might hear "ellay 18" and think they've suddenly warped into Los Angeles.
What would the locals think about hearing "Maryland 3"?
Of course, this all hinges on whether we can get Waze to make the two-letter state abbreviations pronounce the state in this format.
MD-xx is the best, in my opinion, because that is the official abbreviation for state roads. When a highways name is written by MDOT, it is always "MD-xx" (like on traffic cameras on the news). I'll just clarify what others have said: "RT" is ambiguous for the map and the system as a whole even though that is the colloquial name for state highways in the area. At least in Virginia, US and state highways are colloquially called "Routes" like "Route 1" (US 1) or "Route 28" (State Hwy 28). I personally think that the map is more important than what the (ideal) TTS would be because the latter is a cue for me while the map is more definitive. Hearing "Em-dee 32" is not confusing because "Em-dee" can't mean much other than the state, but I do agree it is undesirable.
And moving from Florida where state highways are called "state roads" or SRs, the Florida forum agreed on "SR-xx" but they are now stuck with hearing "State Route 434".

This isn't much of a problem in PA as we already use PA-611 (example) as the norm, probably because our state name is so long. In NJ & DE, I've been using 'SR' as that's what we decided to use in the Tri-State subforum. I think you can use MD as well, but anything longer that 2 letters before the dash takes up precious screen space on the client.

I use PA-xx in PA, but SR everywhere else I edit...NJ-xx, DE-xx, MD-xx don't have the same easy flow as PA in TTS. That's the only reason I haven't been using state abbreviations; I thought "State Rte xx" or "SR-xx" were the standard unless otherwise stated?tibble wrote:RT-## is confusing visually and audibly. Are we back to SR-## which is State Route in tts?(for maryland that is, i loves me some PA-30)
Personally, I'd like the state postal code to be the state abbreviation in TTS...I hope it happens.

Does maryland have it's own shield style? PA does and if maryland does as well i suggest this:
[shield type]-[number]
This appropriately describes whats on the BGS and is easily recognizable visually.
I-95
MD-100
etc....

nah probably not, SR is pretty unobvious :/
The problem for me is the people that tend to say route say it for state and US. but if there aren't any repeated numbers between the two i guess it isn't the end of the world.
I just really like the idea of
