CT Speed Limit Editing Guidelines

Post by AndyPoms
With the help of JAllen, we've taken the CT DOT Speed Limit PDF files and turned them into spreadsheets for better tracking. This document is available on Google Docs - if you want to work on the Waze CT Speed Limit Project, please request edit access & include your Waze username in your request.

While we appreciate the efforts of new editors, in Connecticut speed limits is not something you should try to tackle on your first day. You will most likely need the help of your fellow editors while working on speed limits - either unlocks or help with a segment that is just outside your editing rights. Once you have made contact with your fellow editors & have gotten a hang of how WME works, then ask to help with this project.

All speed limits in CT are assigned in WME according to this spreadsheet (created from the official PDF files). A few towns (sadly very few) have approved default speed limits, they should be applied to all segments not listed in the DOT Town List which take priority. The default speed limit(s) are typically indicated on the first list of the town page & is indicated by "AAA - BLANKET APPROVAL". It is usually best to apply the blanket AFTER you finish the town list.

First step is to assign the SLs road by road as indicated in the spreadsheet, make sure you include your user name, and change the completed segments to green (check other town sheets to confirm you are being consistent). Also, please indicate on the first spreadsheet, "Town by Town" which town you are working on so we don't step on each other's toes, color the Status column next to Lisbon light blue, it should read "TOWN PAGE" or have other notes.

If you can't find a street (or the correct cross street), color the line red, leave a note & also put that info on the "Town Roads - Can't Find" sheet. You can always go back or ask for help figuring it out - sometimes the road has been demolished & no longer exists, but was never removed from the list.

The color keys for both the main page & the individual town pages are available on the first page of the spreadsheet.

Please note, you can't just assume posted speed limit signs in Street View or actually installed on location are correct. There is a “Discrepancy” tab in the spreadsheet for any posted signs which do not match the DOT town listing. They will be reviewed independently but until we are told otherwise, use the original DOT documented SL.

If you have any questions, try the CT Hangout for simple things or PM both AndyPoms & JAllen (send the message to both) in the forum for the more complex.
