Bizarre intersection in South Jersey

Post by MReiser
Is there any intersection anywhere you guys know that looks like this mess?

Surprisingly, it seems to work correctly on Waze. Looking at http://www.historicaerials.com, it appears that NJ built this in the early to mid 1950s.

Almost looks like a proto-DDI with a bit of CFI.

There's a couple of things that could be "improved" there to eliminate any possibility of giving an impossibly turn. Maybe should be split, and once split bridged across US-130 since you can't turn left/right directly. Shorty-CM will complain about the need for the junctions at the stop lines however :)

Should be bridged
Should be bridged unless that U-Turn is allowed.

Looks good, and hopefully TTS makes sense of it.

It's a Continuous-flow intersection, it was the 1st of its kind and probably the only one in this configuration. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuous ... tersection

This is my 1st post, so a quick intro: My name is John, but everyone calls me 'Cranky'. I was born and raised in Camden, and have been driving a taxi in S. Jersey for over 15 years. I'm a diehard "roadgeek" and public transportation fan.

I'm VERY familiar with this intersection, as I lived nearby on Elm St. for 5 years. Many times I've seen people going the wrong way and/or making illegal turns simply because of bewilderment! The signage is very good, but most of the carriageways are only separated by 6" ribbed curbing, only adding to the confusion.

It's better than a traffic circle, though!

Keep on Wazing!

I realize some people disagree with bridging roads that do intersect, but I have recently realized just how much that tactic works to eliminate routing through restricted turns in complicated intersections. There are times where it seems to be the only way.

I updated the intersection as you suggested...I think it was a wise move.

I drove this many times myself. It is daunting on your first drive through. Strange indeed but it is correct.
